live music in Hyndburn
O.K. bear with me , maybe I'm an old 'codger' but I'm just wondering how young folks get going in the music industry in the UK these days, in my day groups and artists made their name on the touring circuit , travelling to different dates and playing in crap clubs up and down the country night after night to gain a following, these days it seems all it needs is to get a spot on some "Oppertunity Knocks" style show to gain fame, only this time instead of Hughie Green we have Simon Cowell .
All the 'record' companies are vetching about the decline in sales , but my question is .....where are the 'new' decent artists, or why aren't established acts releasing new material instead of compilations of greatest hits ?.
Maybe Lindsey from the Music Zone can answer me , but when i was in my local Borders Music the other day the only thing I bought was Dean Martin's Greatest hits , (Doh) nothing else got my attention (prefer Rod the Mod to the American Standards incarnation)
I have young folks who I work with and some of them have never seen a live act unless its been some blockbuster tour in a giant stadium, it seems local clubs and bars no longer have up and comers .
I'm not so old that I am out of touch , Billie Joe Armstrong from the group Green Day I have known for years , since he played at a diner where his Mom was a waitress in the north bay (at 16/17 he was crap , but I still threw a dollar in the tip jar) and know that they toured endlessly across the US and built an act and I even them allowed them to shoot, free of charge a video in my steel plant before they hit the big time , his Mom was worried out of her mind about where he was.
In my day even the backwater that Accrington is could provide live music acts at the Con, Cavern, or Greyhound pub , my question is where do the local kids see live acts.
Thanks

Re: live music in Hyndburn
There seem to be far more tribute bands than original acts going around here these days. Not that the tribute bands aren't very good for the most part but you can get too much of a good thing.

Re: live music in Hyndburn
There`s lots of reasons why you don`t see enough live bands and the main one you included in your post. X factor/karaoke mentality sweeps the nation, step straight from your bedroom mirror into the limo and pay me my 97%, here today (thankfully) gone tomorrow disposable pop tripe, and the public lap it up. Pubs open later pay staff longer drop bands, witherspoons cheap beer no entertainment, kids grow up with bullstuff thump thump music or rappers singing about their privates and shooting people for fun, generations appear witth no imagination and less talent then feed the next gen more sugar coated crap, gangs of 5 year old girls in crop tops singing "sex on the beach" 6 year old hoodies proclaiming themselves gangsters. Tribute bands are obviuosly more successful as they fit the regurgitated safe with what you know attitude of the british pop public, I know cos we play more covers now than we do our own songs. There are still groups of kids who put together great kick ass bands but they`re often short lived unless they`re lucky enough to be snapped up in one of the ever decreasing record company experiments, also most often very short lived. If you wanna make something self sufficient you strip down to a duo, make your backings on your computer and get out as many nights as you can (see www.celticcross.co.uk/gigs.htm ) its biz but thats show biz. Do you pay 150+ quid for a band or 0 < 50 quid for a karaoke when more people would drink more beer making fools of themselves ?
Now you just wait for road pricing to come in and kiss my ass goodbye !
Another thing is everyone moans their little tits off about nothing going on, then when someone does something no-one turns up.
Life`s Sweet.
And you`ve only yourselves to blame.
I shall now recite the lyrics to the Dead Kennedy`s MTV get off the air.
No I won`t I`ll be in trouble with the Mods, do a google search.
Go to the Attic if you want young bands come see us if you want bitter old people.
But never stop believing.
In Father Christmas of course.

, the Dead Kennedys now theres a name from the past , last I heard Jello Biafra was holed up in some 'new age' commune in Colorado or New Mexico and mixed up in a load of litigation over recording royalties, he was a bit of a character here in San Francisco , thinking back , he ran for the city board of supervisors at one time (local council) but lost to Diane Fienstein (now a member of the US Senate) and Sister Boom-Boom a local drag queen .

Re: live music in Hyndburn
The mighty "Gridlock" are on at the Whittaker's on Friday 9th March;they have a lot of live acts on there on Friday nights. Been up to seen the "Gridlock" boys a few times and it's always packed. Think Kingstreet still has acts on but of what nature I couldn't tell you, don't frequent the place though apparently the food is good there. Not as many places put live acts on now;and if they do it tends to be the solo/duo variety. Having recently priced up some tribute acts for a party I am amazed any of them get any bookings at the daft prices a lot of them charge !

Re: live music in Hyndburn
There's no substitute for a real, honest-to-goodness, live band playing maximum rock'n'roll.
Some I've seen in the last few months include the Big Heat, Jack Rabbit Slim, Shaun Horton & the Tennessee Trio, the Crawdads, the Blueflames and the Hicksville Bombers.
Yeah, I know you've never heard of 'em, but you don't know what you're missing!

I think to break into the music industry these days is a hard thing to do unless you are either manufactured or some kind of one hit wonder act that a record company sees some financial gain from. For aspiring new bands it is still the same game of 'doing the circuit' and gaining a loyal following and then pushing out to the cities to gain more attention. It is not as easy now, because record companies are no longer willing to 'take a risk'. What is good for bands now is the internet with sites like Myspace music where bands can promote themselves with ease and get their music heard all over the world.
There is a lot of good unsigned talent locally with a vast array of genres. Places like the Attic and The Adelphi often showcase some good bands / performers (and some bad one too). From what I hear, there are plans for more events promoting local unsigned music around the local area over the next few months.
It’s just a shame that it is so much easier for bands to go and churn out someone else's proven hits than it is to showcase their own original material.
