Question modernising the classics?

What do you think when you hear a classical song thats been rearranged with a modern twist?

This is one of my favourites...........pachelbels canon.... this guys talented but the key change is slightly dodgy!

As a classical musician (once upon a time) i'm kinda stuck between liking it and being a bit annoyed they have messed with one of my favourites.......

what do you think??

Re: modernising the classics?

Love it...just goes on too long. I`m not a fan of classical music, but I would listen to this. If the guy is enjoying his music and some other people do then I think thats good. I know some people may think its a travesty, but musical tastes are different. Music is for enjoyment and entertainment whatever its format. I dont get a lot of modern music at all (yes I am 36) but that wouldnt make me stop people who like it listening to it.

When I was learning to play music, the thing I really liked was being able to take an existing tune and put my own preference/style on to it. If its a choice between an updated version of "we will rock you" or the crazy frog going bing bing baaahhh I know which one I will take

Re: modernising the classics?

Emerson, Lake and Palmer did a LP in the late 60s "Pictures from an Exhibition" a rock version of Mussorgsky and Ravel stuff, seem to remember there was a bit of debate about if they were rock 'purists' or not , one side said Cream (Clapton , Bruce, Taylor ) were the future and these guys were just jumping on the bandwagon , the other thought these guys were ace . myself I think at time I preferred these guys and thought Clapton and co. a bunch of posers , (Disreali Gears apart , which is okay I suppose)

Re: modernising the classics?

Well I'm a lover of music, my main theme is the 60s and 70s but I do like all types of music from classical, country, lite opera (G & S) but don't like Rap. I'm of the opinion that muic should be played as it was written, I don't mind an odd tweak here or there but why change things, its much better to create your own than alter other peoples work

But isn't that the wonderful and glorious and de-lovely thing about this nebulous art-form which we all love..and immerse ourselves in when we pick up, or sit in front of our respesctive instrument (s) B-Man ??.
We can use the imagination, motivation, and sheer genius from the compositions/works of 'the Masters'
( From Bach to Gershwin..to Coltrane et al!) to send ourselves down a road of sheer joy and emotional satisfaction ...and I am more than certain that every time we perform someone else's work, that what flows from our fingers or from our Larynx is far from the
image which the composer had in mind !!.
In respect then of this fact...that we are free and able to interpret the creations of the very best writers and composers that ever put quill to manuscript,,,we are so very, very, lucky !!.
Whether or not we should force these 'personal' interpretations into someone else's auditory pathways and for financial profit..is another ( and I suppose, more protracted ! ) matter altogether.

It seems that we share opinions on this....
Respect to you..and all who attempt to make music sound as it should ( but often fall short !).

'What me Worry ?'...Alfred.E. says that I should do
when I try to wear my erudite hat !!!.

Re: modernising the classics?

I too like most forms of music except rap. There are two musical instruments which can 'send' me - clarinet and saxaphone. There's nothing quite like a sax solo in the middle of a piece.

I don't believe there is a "correct" way to perform what we refer to as "the classics". In many cases the sounds we produce today would be nothing like the sounds which existed when the music was written. Would the original composers approve? Who knows, but I imagine they would be impressed by some of the more imaginative arrangements. Arrangements, variations, interpretations are what keeps music alive.

In some cases simply saying "I like Pachabel's Canon" isn't really a sensible statement because (quite apart from the young man and his amazing guitar talent) there are different arrangements and different qualities of performance. A version for piano will not sound the same as a version for church organ for instance.
Even when an orchestra performs a musical work it may not sound the same in one location as in another. Does that make either one any better or worse than the other?

It happens with more modern music too - and it's down to personal taste whether we like what we hear. It doesn't make the different version any less valid. There are those who love Amy Winehouse's version of "Valerie" but to my ears it's painful.

Isn't it wonderful that we all have different taste?
