Record Players & Vinyl

Following the talk about DJs and CDs, and some people having preference for the sound from vinyl, just wondered how many of us actually have record players. Is it just those of us of a certain age? I know some people buy them to transfer vinyl on to the computer, and then not use the records any more, but I mean to actually listen to the music regularly. What do you enjoy on vinyl, and where do you tend to find your stuff?

I've got quite a bit, from classical to pop, lots of boxed sets and LPs, but no singles.

Re: Record Players & Vinyl

listen to late 50s n 60s mainly on vinyl cazzer, have a couple of thousand singles, maybe more, they changed the vinyl around 70, made it thinner also n that stuff soon picked static/ scratches etc up, so didn't last as long, have a few hundred LPs vinyl, dont play as much at home now, as i was talked out of retirement so the singles are on site.

I'm converted to CDs now, but I still love vinyl. I have a turntable connected to my system and I play my 45s and LPs regularly. In fact, I've gone even further back in time over the last couple of years and started buying 78s via ebay. Although they're a somewhat lo-fi listening experience (it sounds like someone's cooking up a full English in the background on some of them!), I feel like I'm holding a piece of history in my hands. I can just imagine them slipping off the presses in some record plant in Chicago or Los Angeles, or spinning on a gaudy, chrome-plated jukebox in Harlem. There's a certain romance and magic about them that CDs, MP3s, downloads etc just can't match!

I still have a record player but haven't used it for years, but I still have all my old 45s and LPs and will never part with them they're part of my life, I can look at a particular LP and it brings back memories, reminds me of old flames and where I used to go in my youth. CDs are the modern thing but you can't take away your past

Re: Record Players & Vinyl

Vinyl is a touchy subject with me as someone 'borrowed' most of mine and I never got them back. He then did a moonlight.

However,I do still have some and I love to listen to them. You can't beat the old album covers for artwork. It's just not the same on a CD. I've got a stereo system with a record deck, a turntable linked up to a CD player/recorder/dubbing device, speakers and amp from which it should be possible to transfer all the vinyl to CD but I haven't done, and a very old 'stereo record player' which crackles like blazes.

Where do I find my vinyl? Under the shelf behind the telly!

Re: Record Players & Vinyl

I have a couple of old turntables to play my 78s on and one to play the vinyls on, as you say Wynonie it,s like turning the clock back to your youth, also some of them are quite valuable so check before you think about parting with them.

Re: Record Players & Vinyl

I grew up with vinyls, as I wasn't allowed to touch the big cassette player

I concur with the great post from Wynonie - sonically vinyls may not offer us the best experience but as a package, a record is best appreciated with vinyl.

I've got over 400 albums behind me here in the office. I don't play them much but they are a great reference source. The cover is often as important as the record with an LP, I don't think the same is true with CD's.
