Song lyrics - because I'm not in the mood for politics today!

I was listening to Hotel California this morning on my way into work (and before the jokes start, yes I am only 28 but I have a broad music taste ) - a song that I have listened to many times before, though for some reason, whilst sat on the car park that is the M60, I suddenly thought 'what the hell is this song on about?' Now thats not the first time that has happened - I still dont know whats going on in Stairway to Heaven either. So im sat here on my dinner hour still thinking about it and thought I would do a quick post!

So.....Rather than open up the debate (there are loads of what I suspect are drug inspired theories out there on the net already), who else has songs that they like but dont quite understand? And while were at it, any insights on "they stab it with their steely knives but they just cant kill the beast..." would be welcome

Nirvana - smells like teen spirit - teen spirit is actually a deodorant but unfortunately Mr Cobain didnt know this until he'd released the song, the daft sod

i mean, come on, what WAS he on when he wrote this??

Load up on guns
Bring your friends
Its fun to lose
And to pretend
Shes overboard
Myself assured
I know I know
A dirty word

Hello (x 16)

With the lights out its less dangerous
Here we are now
Entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now
Entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido
Yea

Im worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

Hello (x 16)

With the lights out its less dangerous
Here we are now
Entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now
Entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido
Yea

And I forget
Just what it takes
And yet I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard
Its hard to find
Oh well, whatever, nevermind

Hello (x 16)

With the lights out its less dangerous
Here we are now
Entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now
Entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido
Yea

Just one at the moment .. "Stone in love with you" ? Is this anything to do with drugs ... Or an expression I have never heard of ?

You don't have to say you love me just because you're canned

Can't say i understand the lyrics to Hotel California but do think they are clever lyrics especially the last line- " you can check out anytime you like but you can never leave"
Maybe it's some sort of nightmare that you can't escape from?
Also heard it was something to do with the satanic church!
Anton Lavey is supposedly in the photo inside the sleeve of the album Hotel California and this has led people to believe it's satanic!

Re: Song lyrics - because I'm not in the mood for politics today!

According to the band these are just rumours and people reading a bit too deep - they say it has no satanic connection and is a satire on the modern materialistic lifestyle (of course!)

I think of some wierd thriller story where people step into some kind of alternative universe that takes the shape of a hotel - one where all sorts of weird things happen, and that you cant get out of. though when you're sat in traffic on the M60, its a case of either stare at the care in front of you or let your mind wander!

I've just looked at the photo inside the sleeve and up on the balcony there is a man who looks suspiciously like Anton Lavey!

I'm always amazed when I hear people saying; "That GORDON BROWN, he's a great leader". And I wonder, where can one find a drug that would make one so delusional?

Just to clear things up MikeSz- Hotel California is about the excess of celebrity lives in Hollywood. Nothing more.

Flashy - Smells Like Teen Spirit is about anger and frustration at one's self and surroundings as an underclass youth. To answer your other question; he was on a mixture of dope and acid.
The title 'Smells Like Teen Spiri't came from something Krist Novoselic's girlfriend Shelli who wrote on Kurt's wall. 'Kurt smells like Teen Spirit'. Teen Spirit being a female deodorant.

I'm an Eagles geek and a Nirvana geek, yes.

Know what you mean; that's why I like "Wooly Bully" and "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" ...

My friend decided the Hotel California was the earth when it was still in the charts, I've never heard a better explanation. "they stab it with their steely knives but they just cant kill the beast..." then becomes the way we mistreat the earth and how it survives and " you can check out anytime you like but you can never leave" is perhaps you can kill yourself but you'll still be here.
