The Four Pennies

A member of Blackburn's 1960's chart topping band The Four Pennies has died aged 63. 'Fritz' Fryer, born David Roderick Carney Fryer died in hospital near his home in Lisbon Portugal. Fritz Fryer co-wrote the groups major success 'Juliet' which knocked the Searchers from Top Ten number one spot in 1964. After five further Top Ten hits and tours with The Beatles the group broke up in 1966.

Re: The Four Pennies

Lionel Morton of the Four Pennies married the actress Julia Foster. It was said they took their name from Penny St. in Blackburn but I don't know if that was true.

According to Wilkopedia that would be correct;

The group's name came after a meeting above the Blackburn music shop owned by Mary Reidy, the shop being situated on 'Penny Street' where it is still located today as "Reidy`s Home of Music". [4] The name was chosen as a more commercial alternative to 'The Lionel Morton Four'. The shop is still owned by the Reidy family.

I used to live on the next street to Alan Buck's family in Brierfield

Saw them a few times, up the con. Bought a couple of shirts, from Lionel's boutique, on King street in Blackburn, my dad thought I was mad cause I spent One pound ten each on them alot of money in those days. The shop didnt last long about a year I think.
