Top 40 Charts

"Amarillo" holds top spot on charts

Crooner Tony Christie has topped the charts for a second week with his 70s classic "Is This the Way to Amarillo?", the Official UK Charts Company says.

His chart success -- 34 years after his song was first released -- was helped along by comedian Peter Kay, who appeared in a spoof video lip-synching the lyrics to the tune, which was released to raise money for Comic Relief.

"Is This the Way to Amarillo?" beat off competition from Mario's R&B track "Let Me Love You", one of five new entries in the top 10 on Sunday.

McFly and the band's double A-side "All About You/You've Got a Friend", another tune released as part of Comic Relief, which raises money for charitable causes in Britain and Africa, fell one place to number three.

Rapper 50 Cent's "Candy Shop" featuring Olivia was a new entry at number four, while Elvis Presley's run in the British charts continued with "Return to Sender", also a new entry at five.

Straight in at number six was Will Smith's "Switch", while Gwen Stefani, formerly of Californian group No Doubt, tumbled three places to number seven with her track "Rich Girl".

The track features American rapper Eve, who used Stefani on her hit "Let Me Blow Ya Mind".

Australian soap star turned chart-topping singer Natalie Imbruglia's "Shiver" was the chart's fifth new entry at number eight.

Brighton band Sunset Strippers tumbled four spots to nine with "Falling Stars", a remix of the 1980s hit "Waiting For a Star to Fall". American rapper Nelly and country artist Tim McGraw dropped three places with the love song "Over and Over" to round out the top 10.

GLAD ITS STILL THERE!!

Re: Top 40 Charts

Apparently "the Peter Kay song" as it's now known in our store was outselling everything else by miles and sold more than the rest of the Top Forty combined.I don't know exactly how many units you need to shift to get a number One these days but it's not the thousands it used to be,don't think they award platinum discs anymore, singles are such a loss leader and only really worth bothering with for extra tracks and dvd extras, like "Amarillo".

Its about 30,000 - 40,000 for a top ten or a #1 depending on what sells during that week i think.

Re: Top 40 Charts

Seventies crooner Tony Christie has shocked the pop world by holding on to pole position in both the singles and album charts. The 61-year-old is loving the limelight with a new version of (Is This The Way To) Amarillo and his Definitive Collection holding steady in the top spot.Amarillo, a charity single for Comic Relief which features the vocal talents of comic Peter Kay, stays at number one for the third week running.

The song only reached number 18 in the chart of November 1971 when it was originally released.

Comedian Kay revived the kitsch classic with a rendition at the start of his stand-up act.

A reissue of the 1963 Elvis hit (You're the) Devil in Disguise charted at number two, while Mario's Let Me Love You was shunted down to third place.

Mariah Carey's comeback single It's Like That entered at number four while rival diva Kylie Minogue had to settle for sixth place with her latest offering Giving You Up.

Christie continues to top the album chart, with Basement Jaxx collection The Singles close behind and Language Sex Violence Other by Stereophonics in third place.

Rap star 50 Cent's album The Massacre moves up one place to number four and New Order's much-anticipated Waiting For the Siren's Call entered at number five.

Re: Top 40 Charts

Singles are becoming more worthwhile, now that they have videos on them.

It seems odd that a lot of the charts is filled up with cover versions of this and that, and also re-releases of old songs.

Is there no original material out there any more, or are we doomed to number 1 after number 1 of bl**dy Elvis?

Or is Priscilla broke?
