I've just picked up Ultimate Blues (been advertised on TV) its a first class double CD 41 tracks including John Mayall, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, B.B. King, Irma Thomas, Little Walter, John Lee Hooker and lots more, well worth a tenner

Yeah, I saw that advertised on TV last night. No point in me buying it, as I've got 99% of the stuff on it already, but well worth it for those who just want to dip their toe in the water. Nice to see good music getting a bit of a push in the wider market!

Ya Wynonie I have quite a few too but its great to have them all on one CD, as I'm not into new fangled IP3 players or whatever they're called, and please don't mention burning CDs we ain't even going there mate

Agreed, Jaysay, it's quite handy for dyed-in-the-wool fans like us. But I always hope that others who aren't familiar with blues will take a chance on a compilation like this and start delving more into the music. That's what happened with me when I bought an album that was in the top ten LP charts in summer, 1966. It was called "John Mayall - Eric Clapton - Bluesbreakers" and I've never looked back since!

I used to say something similar, as I could never see myself going completely digital with my music. However, in the last few months I've ripped my entire CD collection to a 500gb hard-drive and I've boxed up my CDs and put them in the loft.

I ripped my CDs as lossless FLAC files (not these compressed MP3s) and the sound I get is easily the equivalent of a £1000 CD player. In fact, I'm going to sell my CD player, as I don't have use for it. I'm using a Squeezebox Duet wirelessly, which is connected to a decent stereo Hi-Fi system and DAC, but it has shown me the way to the future.

Good choice on the CD Jaysay, but like Wynonie, I have most of the tracks already.

TM , I have to take you to task on this Flac business.The fact that Flac files are 'lossless' is irrelevant when you consider that (and from other posts I'm assuming that, like me , you're over 50 ish.... errr something like that ). Anyway, the point is that our hearing at the higher frequencies diminish with age, so you're gonna lose the 'harmonics' anyway. Yeh, ditch your £1000 Cd player, it's not gonna count but rip your tracks to mp3 at a higher bit rate say 320 for higher quality and you'll save space over flac files

Maybe it's because I'm not as old as you assume, but I can certainly tell the difference between MP3 and lossless files. MP3s at whatever bitrate always sound 'closed in' and lack separation to my ears. Sometimes it comes down to the limits of the source material (CDs aren't all that great to be honest), but a good lossless source played on some decent equipment has noticably clearer separation and a generally more open sound.
Using a 500gb harddrive purely for music, space isn't really an issue anyway.
