Re: Whats your favourite band?
Totally agree with that. Some music can bring back memories you would otherwise have completely forgotten.
No way can you say that the Beatles were ever a "boy band" in the sense of the likes of Westlife and Boyzone - but on rerflection I think maybe the name "boy band" is better suited to people like The Beatles more than Westlife and Boyzone because they actually played their instruments and made all of the music themselves when they were starting out. To see a "group" like that live in a place like Liverpool's "Cavern" in the early days was something you had to experience to actually understand.
Anybody here remember The Warriors?
My musican tastes are very varied, including people like Alice Cooper, Meatloaf, The Eagles, Dr. Hook, Queen, Don Williams, Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, Buffy St Marie (to mention some you'll probably have heard of) and a very aquired taste which I'm currently enjoying once again thanks to the wonders of modern technology - a German group from the 60s/70s called The Lords. I mainly enjoy late 60s/early 70s music but that doesn't mean I don't also like some later things too.
We're going to a Busted concert next week (but that's for the kids)

Re: Whats your favourite band?
lol well u got a large variety of interest as well its great to know that there are people around who actually appreciate the general music instead of the higher class pieces like opera and so forth. The Beatles were more of a boy band i would have to agree and yes the boyzone and westlife are basically groups as u have said so maybe they should reconsider what they call it in the mags n papers

Re: Whats your favourite band?
Although the Beatles were a boy band, at least they were actually able to play their instruments!

Re: Whats your favourite band?
Girls Aloud are funny .... Busted and McFly are a mix of every male pop band from the 60's to now? They ain't very original.I am a little like John Peel in my tastes I can listen to anything - I think Mike Pickering DJ from Manchester said that there are only 2 types of music -Good or Bad!!!Yeh the whole point of music is to stimulate emotions - experiences of all different types - coz it all means differnet things!

Re: Whats your favourite band?
Thats very true and having the ability to convey those emotions through to the people can have both a good and bad effect depending on the music

Re: Whats your favourite band?
Great! an interesting music thread, I can't be doing with those "your band are tish" ones. I'm with Mr Pickering on this one. Although I'll admit that I like some very bad music as well as good! Some of that 60's garage rock is so bad that you've got to love it.
I don't think the pop groups of today have the advantage of serving an 'apprenticeship' playing the toilets, they are more or less learning their craft on tv. Having said that, some of these are the performers we will be listening to for years to come...like your Beatles/Cliff! etc...both of these were marketed by clever types to teenage girls when they first got famous.
More to the point...some faves are; Primal Scream, Velvets, Smiths, Beach Boys, White Stripes and Spiritualized.
...just don't start slagging any of them lol

Re: Whats your favourite band?
If you want an example of a 60s group who were 'marketed by clever types' you need look no further than The Monkees. They were originally an artificial creation but went on to produce some very worthwhile sounds.

They may not be very original, but they have a veritable army of 6 year-old fans down here in Tunbridge Wells!!!

Yes Willow, and wasn't their lead singer Davy Jones from Accy?

Re: Whats your favourite band?
There's something vaguely in the back of my mind about an Accy connection but I can't remember what it was. I met him over 20 years ago at Harwood Fair (took a photo which if I can find I will post) and I remember him saying something then about Accrington but can't for the life of me remember what.

Re: Whats your favourite band?
Davy himself actually comes from Manchester so maybe he has/had family in Ossy.
Here's one of the photos I took years ago.

Re: Whats your favourite band?
In that pic he looks a little like Dave Hill...
Meanwhile Col Kurts I think at the end of the day all successful bands have been marketed by some clever business man, even bands that we don't associate with havning done so i.e. Led Zepelin,Hendrix etc.Bands that tend to chug along on their own steam don't tend to be as famous as those with clever managers.
Anyway back in the 70's the boundaries between music were much more defined and there were less labels for popular music forms.Punk came along and blew out the cobwebs but didn't change things that much because you still had things like the Beegees and Abba at number one.Today there is nothing new in music apart from the way it is produced - but every generation has to have it's own thing so you have bands like Busted who don't have an ounce of originality and everything is nicked off someone else!
Now that's my Music Journo rant for today! ...meanwhile back to the Jungle - or was it Tunbridge Wells?
