Adam , I must own up .
About four years ago I introduced the
ellipsis (for that is its name , as I'm sure you'll recall from your several years of studying the English language) , into my correspondence on the Official ASFC forum which preceded our current - and independent - virtual organ .
Before that it was noticeable by its absence .
I felt , and still feel , that it is one of the most useful pieces of punctuation for those who wish to post on forums such as ours . It helps the reader to imagine a pause in the "spoken" sentence and it creates a sense of what actors and comedians know as "timing" in the delivery of a line .
Since its introduction , the
ellipsis has been wholeheartedly embraced by other correspondents to both the former and the present forums , and I'm pleased to have been instrumental in its adoption .
Of course ,
some posters will eschew its use altogether while others will wear the damned thing out completely .
Overall , though , I think it's a Good Thing and should be incorporated into our miniature masterpieces of prose whenever it is needed , but always with the understanding that there should be a maximum of three points . . .
