Basic Skills
Well done the lads for coming back to claim a point today against a much-improved York side. I am not about to criticise the team or individuals. However, during the course of the game, there were numerous examples of players failing to trap the ball to get it quickly under control when they received a pass. Often, this resulted in possession being given away. The advantages to be gained by mastering this basic skill of the game are obvious. It's no use contemplating making a 30-40 yard defence-splitting pass (even if you can) if you can't instantly/quickly gain control of the ball. Then again, if someone makes such a pass it must be heartbreaking to see the recipient fumble to gain control of the ball and be dispossessed. Players at Conference level should be competent at what is after all a basic skill of Football. I have, yet again, seen for myself today that many are not.
