Re: Bournemouth Match Thread

The Cherries played to their strengths, which while not pleasing on the eye, away from home it was a workman like performance and got them the three points, Stanley huffed & puffed and ended up trying the long ball over the top to use Grant's pace often bypassing the midfield totally which is not to our strengths and endlessly just finding the ball coming straight back at us.

Too many off the pace today maybe the number of games with such a small squad is perhaps taking it's toll? or maybe we have just got used to being treated to some great football this season

Re: Bournemouth Match Thread

Bobby Grant's looked like it was just outside the area and Proccy's I have seen them given but in all essence he stayed on his feet and could have probably finished it?

Not fit to ref schoolboys..............
Agreed. The "offence" that resulted in Coley being sent off was ones of the more outstanding **** ups in a game full of refereeing **** up. Symes didn't even make contact with their defender who pirouetted on the spot before rolling around of the floor in agony for more than 4 minutes. Result: Symes booked and Coley sent off for shouting at the cheating bastard to get up.

Stanley tried to play football against a dirty, dirty team who took full advantage of a pitiful referee. We'd have been better kicking diving and time wasting, it evidentially takes teams with no talent to the top of the league.

The tackle on Proccie looked like a penalty - took his back foot; Grant, from where I was, was just outside the box.

Out hustled, I thought; we didn't want to shoot, for some reason, and Bobby seemed to be looking over his shoulder to see who was going to clatter him, rather than - as recently he's been doing superbly well - looking for the goal. One of those days where every ricochet went away from us, but too many times we didn't look before we passed, and too often we put it straight back to their players when we did win it. They always seemed to have two men closing us down very quickly, and we didn't settle until - impressively - we really went for it late on. Trouble was, by then we were one down ............ We deserved something, I thought (as did the group I was with) and we'll play much worse and win before the season's over

Re: Bournemouth Match Thread

I thought depite the defeat the lads played quite well. First penalty shout a looked pretty solid and as for Grant's / second penalty shout, I was sat adjacent to it in Main Stand and it looked borderline ?? Right on the edge, could have been called either way, which unfortunately and to our detriment it went the wrong way as far as Stanley were concerned.

That said the ref was pretty inept, am I right in saying he was the ref who gave the goal that never was ( Watford v Reading ) where the ball never went anywhere near the goal ??? I may be wrong, but if so it would go a long way towards explaining his performance today. Seemed to me, like many referees we seem to get these days, that HE wanted to be centre of attention and some of his decisions today lost me for words.

Every time that big lump Fletcher went up for an aerial challenge he was either leading with the elbow or tugging away at the defender!! And the timewasting element that Bournemouth deployed after going 1 up stuck in the throat....admittedly all sides probably do it, but they seemed to take it to the extreme.

That said, I'm not too despondant, we'll probably play worse than that and win, but after last week against Cheltenham the one thing that seemed to stick with me .... we seemed at times,a little pre-occupied with long ball stuff. The four goal blitz last week was on the deck stuff.

Over all, I can't see us being involved in the bottom end scrap we've endured for the last three seasons and Coley is continuing his record of improvement....Tax situation and other finance problems permitting that is.

I was sat in the Clayton End and the 'tackle' on Proccy was definitely a penalty, and I say that as a referee. Notably he referee had a perfect view and the assistant on the Shed side was just as awful.

And although Michael Oliver is not my favourite Referee...Michael Symes did
mistime his tackle on their defender..did catch him... and it was a free-kick!!..
but nothing to make 'the youngest Referee in Football' go for his Yellow Card in the dramatic fashion which caused JC;s consternation !!..

Re: Bournemouth Match Thread

Looking from the end of the Whinney Hill rerrace... (a) I don't think the Proccy incident was a penalty, nor did those around me. We felt there was maybe an attempt to foul, but no contact. The Grant one could have gone either way - very difficult to judge. These are just opinions of course, but unfortunately, it's the ref's opinion that counts - and I've seen penalties given for the likes of both incidents.
General feeling about the game? I felt Bournemouth were a physical, somewhat cynical and rather unpleasant outfit, but maybe that's what wins games, if not friends. It was no game for the likes of Miles or Grant who, in the words of Corporal Jones "Don't like it up 'em!". Also, it was interesting to see that the RNIB once again chose the MoM, as I felt Ryan was pretty invisible for most of the time, apart from his superb strike, which could have saved us a point.

I disagree with Shaky about Symes. I thought he put in a good shift, against a lot of physical challenges and with little support - on another day, he'll get his rewards. THe young lads at the back did, in my opinion, a sterling job, well marshalled again by the ever-dependable Phil Edwards, and I personally thought that the MoM award should have gone to Tom Lees who is starting to look a class act.

So, all in all, a slightly disappointing day at the office but nothing to be too disheartened about. I think we're on the right road and, if it contiinues, I foresee a top-half finish,if not quite the play-offs.

That's so !!....but he did incense Neil Warnock last season to a degree where he described his performance thus ....

." I was astonished when I heard that he was to be the Referee, and find it very difficult to understand how a young man of that age can possibly take charge of such a game.".. and someone else said of him " Young Mr Oliver has never been a player and so does not understand Players!"

(Earlier this season, also at Watford, another young referee, Stuart Attwell who is just twenty-six, awarded a remarkable goal to Reading when the ball had actually not gone anywhere near the goal! )..Confirmation...!
