Council backs new stadium bid

taken from todays Lancashire Telegraph

"Ilyas Khan's latest plans to build Stanley a new stadium in Church has met with initial council backing.

Both HBC's conservative leader and the areas labourd ward councillor said they welcomed the theplans as an exciting idea which owuld help regeneration.

Council leader Peter Britcliffe has pledged to help the multi-millionaire in any way possible and said he was happy to meet with stanley bosses to discuss the idea.

Mr Khan, who became Stanley's non-executive Chairman when he saved the reds from winding up proceedings, this week revealed a new stdium could be placed on the former Arnold Clark site near Hyndburn Sports Centre.

No opposition to the scheme is likely to come from ward counciloor Joan Smith, who said both she and colleague John Broadley would like to see the plan work.

councillor Britcliffe said " it is a wonderful ambition for Mr Khan to work towards and I wish him every success"

Ward Councillor Joan Smith said "It would provide very welcome regeneration for Church. Of course it will have to meet with traffic requirements but on the face of it it seems a good idea"

Well that looks like the Council onside, the fans are pretty much all onside, the man with the coin is totally onside, we just need the numpties at the top to make things easy now - much more preferable than the inevitable only being postponed whilst they talk crap with solicitors (no doubt charged to the club)

Near to the Sports Centre was mentioned at last week's meeting, although Ilyas did say if anyone had any suggestions for other sites to let him know

Re: Council backs new stadium bid

the old central car sales site is mentioned and is currently available!
At first glance it doesn't look big enough but the site is huge. A nice little bridge over the river to join the sports centre would massively increase the space.

Demolish the Arndale, the decrepid looking council building and the soon to be defunct Market Hall. A new stadium with it's own bus station and little shops on the approach would be great in the centre

This is the location:

Maps of the world, street map search - powered by Multimap

Does look rather tight to fit a football stadium there, but it is an ideal location for a football club and for attracting non-football revenue streams.

Ossy train station is nearer and the motorway is a 1 minute drive.

Huncoat power station.
That land at back of Accy College.
Bullough Park
Wilsons - might cause some uproar.

Re: Council backs new stadium bid

Is it the Arnold Clark site available???
I got a letter off them a few week back telling me it was being closed as a car sales point but was going to be used for storage and a network drop off/pick up point for their dealer operation

Re: Council backs new stadium bid

yes Arnold clark site.

perhaps one of our picture doctors could mock up how our existing ground would fit inside that area to demonstrate whether there is enough room. I suspect that the trees around the river would have to go (cue the tree huggers coming out) and that the power station (bottom left as you look overhead on google earth) would create some kind of issue. There's also a house top right that probably wouldn't be too keen on shifting, or having 3000 people hang around its back garden every weekend! If that wasn't there then there'd be no issue whatsoever with size
