A lot of posts since I started my reply to this one, still here goes ...
I don’t know what the Ultras chant about Eric. I wouldn’t wish to glorify him, but I don’t have any problem with an occasional acknowledgement from the terraces of what he achieved before it all went wrong.
I have no idea how much of his own money he may have poured into the club up until the time we made it back into the League. I suspect it may have been well over £308,000.
As far as I know, he always made it clear that he didn’t want to remain as Chairman when (if) we made it back. Maybe this was because he knew he couldn’t afford to provide the increased financial backing that would be required, maybe he simply knew he didn’t have the ability to run the much more complex business the club would have to become if it was to meet all your increased expectations.
For 3 years after promotion, nobody seemed to want to take on the job. More money must have been required to keep things going over this period. If EW provided this (and until Ilyas rode into town I don’t know who else might have done), it would not, in my opinion, have been unreasonable for him to consider it to be a loan, or to expect repayment at some point when he finally managed to disentangle himself. Which would explain the current problem with opening balances.
As for the accusations of lying about us being debt-free, I would guess that if you’re trying to keep sponsors on board you may occasionally feel the need to be a bit “economical with the truth” about your financial position. Sponsors won’t be too keen to be associated with organisations in administration.
I'm only guessing, but when I put all the possibilities in the balance, I don’t see any reason why the Ultras shouldn’t occasionally acknowledge his contribution in the early days. Anyway, surely everyone is prepared to agree that “There’s only one Eric Whalley” (though some may wish to add “thank goodness”).
Bye bye Karma .....
On the other hand, last season I don’t think anybody on the business management side had the slightest idea which way was up until October (although I seem to remember everybody om here was very positive about the "new regime" for a couple of months), and I'm just hoping (being the eternal optimist) things are a bit better this time around.
