Grays Athletic

Grays are 3-0 up at Scarboro, half time. They are playing well at the moment. Looks like they have hit form at the right time. Good job they had that "bad patch" earlier in the year!

Would you bet against them in the playoffs?

No, and good luck to them, I liked the way they played up here. Definitely 2nd best team in Conference from what I've seen; fans aren't bitter and twisted, either, unlike some in play offs.

Re: Grays Athletic

Great result for them at a club fighting relegation although i for one thought we would see much more fight on Saturday..It'll be hard for them to be stopped in the Play Offs and i wouldn't mind seeing them come up with us, good luck to 'em!

Re: Grays Athletic

Todd's goal obviously softened them up. I thought when Scarborough's No.2 was shouting at McNiven to, "Get your arse in gear", it said a lot about their season.

Exeter fans will be going apoplectic about fan bases if Grays come up with us, another good reason for them to succeed.

I still fully belive, as much as i dont like it, that Hereford United will win the Play-Off's, and beat Halifax in the final

I think everyone is afraid of Grays now, with Michael Kightley and Glen Poole seemingly scoring in almost every match for them. They have to be hot favourites on current form and unless fixture congestion gets the better of them, I cannot see any side stopping them in the play offs.In retrospect, it does not make our 3-2 home defeat to Grays look like any kind of disgrace.

Although you think Hereford will win the play-offs Dan, I cannot see it myself. They are sure to be incredibly nervous after their failure to make it in each of the last two seasons, and their best hope is for Grays to have a couple of off days and go out to someone like Halifax.

In any event, at least the pressure is off now for Stanley - and they don't have to worry about Grays again till next season (possibly).

Re: Grays Athletic

I see where your coming from Urban, but when you consider there past seasons, you see thta when they have been in "form" they havent gone anywhere
Many Hereford fans i talk to are pleased at the moment, and consistantly tell me that form counts for nothing in the play-off's, as they have shown in past seasons

I take your point totally Dan - and freely admit that I do not have a great technical knowledge of football or of the previous results and form in the play offs over the last few years, other than what I have recently read on various forums and by my own research.

I guess the beauty of the play offs is the fact that previous form perhaps has to be thrown out of the window when assessing the sides, and I believe that much of it will boil down to who keeps their nerve on the days in question, and who has that necessary will to win, somewhat like a Cup Final. From my own minimal knowledge, I know that favourites do not always win - I understand that Hereford won their final 11 League matches in the 2003/2004 season but still went out to Aldershot in the play-off semi finals, despite having done the double over them in the Conference league earlier in the season.

From a personal standpoint, though it really helps to liven up the season end, I find the whole play off system very unfair. It has been said to me several times that all teams know what the rules are before the start of the season, and that is very true - it is also true that it is the same for everyone. Having said that, it does not mean that the system is necessarily fair.

Though I hold no particular torch for Hereford (and I have heard a few bad things about their fans), the 2003/2004 season illustrates my point, when they finished 1 point behind Chester and 17 points ahead of the third placed side, having played consistently well nearly all season.A just reward for any side in those circumstances would have been automatic promotion.

How would we have felt if this had happened to Stanley ?

I know that whatever system is devised, each will have its supporters and critics - it is basically a no win situation - but I cannot see what is wrong with the first two being automatically promoted.

I freely admit to not being knowledgeable about all the whys and wherefores of football - and I expect to be howled down - but I do have a lot of sympathy for Hereford - and though you probably won't like me saying this Dan - I for one hope they do win it !
