Good day to you. I am undertaking some research for each football club, in what I hope will be the start of a massive project that creates the ultimate guide to every football club in the UK.
As a football fan myself, I’m a little bit of a statto; I love the atmosphere of awaydays, the singing, the drinking, the taunting; the rose-tinted views of my club and the utter self-deprecation; the history behind every club and what the future holds, and so on. For me, I feel that I am a football fan, almost as much as I follow my own team.
Football unites many people, despite the rivalries, despite the tribal attitudes, what brings us together is our love for football. This is why we support our national team, but moreover, why many football fans round together to help each other in times of crisis. Causes such as Brighton’s homelessness, Wimbledon’s rebirth as AFC Wimbledon, and Coventry City’s fight are just some examples of causes that unite many football fans around the country.
Let’s face it, if football clubs die, even the ones you hate the most, then we may as well give up and accept that football as we know and love it will die. I am a traditionalist. I believe that whilst some of the horrific things that used to happen in football are being eradicated and rightly so, there are so many great things about football that are dying with it.
What I am looking for is information that you, the fan, feels that should be of interest to other fans. Which clubs play any relevance to you at all and what do you think of them? You might even have nice things to say about other clubs, or have a soft spot for other clubs.
Anyway, now for the questions:
1) Of course, you are fans of your club. Your club is most likely “by far the greatest team, the world has ever seen”…………so why do you think this? What makes your club so special? Or is it simply blind faith? Of course, you’re going to think this about your club, no matter how crap your club is?
2) Some football fans are self-deprecating and have the ability to find humour. Some fans are just a bunch of moaners, yet still attend every game just to moan! Some fans are just arrogant, have little or no humour, take it way too seriously and stop going at the first sign of not winning something. Some fans are just blindly loyal, fiercely passionate……almost a bit mental. Some fans are just there to gob off at the opposition, or anyone really. In a general sense, how would you sum up your supporters?
3) What numbers do you think your hardcore fanbase, i.e. the absolute die-hards, are?
4) What’s the atmosphere in your ground like for the opposition? Mental for the big derbies only? Bonkers all of the time? Intimidating? Like a library?
5) Which clubs do your club and its fans tend to respect or get on with ok and why?
6) Which clubs do you club and its fans despise and why? Are there any incidents or famous stories that really hit a nerve to explain the hatred?
7) What is your club famous for? Feel free to name as many things as you can! Maybe other fans ought to know what you “should” be famous for!
8) What’s the most famous game your club has ever been involved in?
9) What’s the most famous incident your club has been involved in that you think other fans might find interesting?
10) What else would you want to mention about your club? Absolutely anything that has been forgotten in the previous questions!!!
