Here we go, Here we go, Here we go - The Answers

Accrington Stanley Prediction League

Starters for Ten (Number 2)
ANSWERS

1. We all know that the longest continuously-serving Managers’ List reads “Ainsworth, Howe, Dyche, Coleman .....”; but who is currently the longest-serving League Two Manager, and which club is he at?

John McGreal at Colchester United, appointed on 4th May 2016 – five days before Mark Cooper at Vegan Greenpeace United

2. The “British Home Championship” (England v Scotland v Wales v Northern Ireland) was first played in 1883/84, and last played in 1983/84; who won the last-ever competition, and what was unusual about the final table?

Northern Ireland won it. All four teams finished on W1 D1 L1 with 3 points, but NI had a +1 GD, Wales and England had a zero GD, and Scotland finished on -1

3. England scored two goals in their three BHC games that season; both were scored by a European Cup-winning international striker who played at the time for Arsenal, but who also played for 1. FC Koln in the Bundesliga; who was he?

Tony Woodcock

4. On 2nd May 1953 Blackpool beat Bolton in the Matthews Final, winning 4-3; the winning goal was scored in Fergie Time (90+2) – but who scored it?

Mortensen got the first three; the winner was scored by Bill Perry

5. Football has been interrupted before, of course; two World Wars, and the Freeze Up of 1962/63 (which many of us remember). The FA Cup Round 3 games began on 5th January and finished on 11th March, with 16 ties each being called off 10 times or more; but when Airdrie played Stranraer in that season’s Scottish Cup, how many goes did they have before eventually the match was concluded?

It was postponed 33 times, so – 34 goes before it concluded, Airdrie winning 3-0

6. And since we’re on the 1962/63 season, who won the League that year (with 25 wins and 11 draws for 61 points) and who won the FA Cup?

League – Everton, and FA Cup - Man U

7. And which northern team opened their stadium as an ice-rink?

Halifax Town

8. Which current Prawn Sandwich League manager managed Halifax Town between 2002 and their demise in 2008?

Chris Wilder

9. Only three managers have won the European Cup/Champions’ League three times; Zidane (2016/17/18 with Real; Ancelotti (2003 & 2007 with AC Milan and 2014 with Real); and ....................... who?

Bob Paisley (and not – as was suggested – Ian Paisley!)

10. Which royally-supported surprise package team won the European Cup in 1981/82, seeing off Bayern 1-0 in the Final?

Aston Villa

11. The year that the Stanley won the Bananarama (or whatever it was then), which team came up with us, via the play-offs? And who did they beat (3-2) in the Playoff Final?

Hereford Utd beat Halifax Town

12. Name the two teams which have won the Conference/Bananarama the greatest number of times since 1986/87, when winning it gave you automatic promotion to the EFL (Division 4 or League Two)?

Barnet and Macclesfield Town (3 each); Macclesfield weren’t actually promoted the first time (94/95) because their ground didn’t pass the test

13. Name any sides which have won the Conference/Bananarama, or gone up through the playoffs, which are currently playing higher than League One?

Luton Town (winners in 2013/14, currently in the Championship)

14. How many times in total did the Stanley have to apply for re-election to either Div 3 North or Div 4?

Five times while in Div3North, but never while in Division 4 (hardly a great surprise)

15. Name the five teams to have FAILED re-election since 1959, and the teams which replaced them (a bonus point if you match each team with the one they were replaced by)

1960 - Gateshead, replaced by Peterborough
1970 – Bradford Park Avenue, replaced by Cambridge
1972 – Barrow, replaced by Hereford Utd`
1977 – Workington Town, replaced by Wimbledon
1978 – Southport, replaced by Wigan

16. Who scored the most PSL goals in their career; Nicolas Anelka, Robin van Persie, Andy Cole or Teddy Sheringham?

Anelka 125, van Persie 144, Cole 187, Sheringham 146

17. Which was the last non-League side to beat a Prawn Sandwich League team in the FA Cup, and who did they beat? And which Bananarama side LOST to a Prawn Sandwich side in the same Round, in the same Season?

Lincoln City won 1-0 at Burnley (5th Round, 2016/17); Sutton Utd lost 2-0 at home to the Gunners

18. Who was the first Goalkeeper to be voted Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’’ Association? And who was the last GK to win the same award? And who was the last player to win it while playing for a Lancashire team?

First GK to win it was Man City’s Bert Trautmann (1955/56); last keeper to win was Everton’s Neville Southall (1984/85); last Lancashire-team winner was Alan Shearer (1993/94)

19. In the last ten seasons there have been only four English winners of the Footballer of the Year trophy; Raheem Sterling, Jamie Vardy, Wayne Rooney ……….. and which player-turned-Manager was the fourth of those four?

Scott Parker (2010/11) – now Manager of Fulham, then a player for the Hammers (who were relegated that season despite his efforts)

20. British transfer fees shot up over the years to ridiculous sums, mostly paid by English or Spanish clubs; Dennis Law was the first £100,000+ player when Man U signed him from Torino in July 1962; Trevor Francis was the first £Million player (actually the fee, without add-ons, was £975,000), when Forest signed him from Man City in Feb 1979 ……………. But once, just once, the record fee was paid by a Scottish side (deep pockets, short arms) when they signed a player from West Ham. Who was the player, and which of the Caber-Tossing Giants of Scottish Footie signed him?

Syd Puddefoot, signed in Feb 1922 by Falkirk for £5,000
