ACCRINGTON STANLEY v HEREFORD UNITED
By Peel Parker
7.45pm Friday 7th October 2005
The game this week has been brought forward to Friday night, let’s hope that we get a bigger attendance than we did against Woking, the last time the kick-off time was re-arranged because of an England game. After five straight wins we have now had one defeat and a draw. Last Saturday our jinx struck again – we cannot beat Gravesend. Let’s hope that Hereford’s jinx strikes again – they cannot beat Stanley at IES.
STANLEY
Last Saturday saw Stanley draw again with Gravesend, that’s four draws and one defeat in the five games we have played them. Results went for Stanley with Grays drawing with Halifax, and both Morecambe and Exeter losing, leaving Stanley in third place in the league three points behind leaders Grays. The Reds have kept up their record of scoring in every league game this season and aim to keep that going against Hereford. Hereford have an impressive away record this season having won three, drawn one and lost two, conceding only four goals in the six games. After twelve games last season we had won six, drawn two and lost four and had twenty points, this season we have won seven, drawn two and lost three and have twenty three points, three more than at this stage last season. Our thirteenth game last season, coincidentally, was at home against Hereford when we won 2-1 in front of the Sky cameras. Let’s hope for a repeat. Robbie Williams will miss the match serving a ban for accumulating five yellow cards, Peter Cavanagh is a doubt after injuring his ankle in last Saturday’s game against Gravesend, but Chris Butler will be available again following his suspension for his sending off against Morecambe. Romuald Boco has joined up with the Benin squad for their last World Cup qualifier against Libya on Sunday and will miss Friday’s game, Benin have yet to win a qualifying game having played nine, drawn two and lost seven, Libya have played nine, won three, drawn three, and lost three. The first game in Libya finished 4-1 to Libya. Benin will finish bottom of their group and will not qualify for either the World Cup finals or the 2006 African Nations Cup. Good luck Rommy.

HEREFORD UNITED
For the last two seasons Hereford United have finished runners up in the Conference and were left facing heartbreak as their promotion dreams were wrecked at the play-off stage. Having dominated the league during the 2003/4 season and failing to land the title by a point from Chester City, Hereford were defeated by Aldershot in the play-off semi finals. In season 2004/5 after yet another strong performance in the league again finishing second, albeit some distance behind leaders Barnet, Stevenage were the team to deny the Bulls promotion by defeating the West Country side in the playoff semi-finals. Fans must be left wondering what they have to do to get themselves promoted from the Conference.

OUR RECORD AGAINST THE BULLS
2003-2004
– Hereford were top of the league when they came to the IES on Tuesday 11th November, but when they left they were down to fourth. Stanley won the game 2-0. Lutel James scored the first Stanley goal just before half-time and Paul Mullin added a second with ten minutes remaining. The away fixture at Edgar Street was on 13th March and with 18 minutes to go Steve Halford was sent off for hauling down Guinan in the penalty area, Tony James converted the spot kick to give Hereford a 1-0 win.
2004-2005
– Stanley hosted Hereford on Monday 11th October in a game broadcast live on Sky Television. Paul Mullin made it 1-0 to Stanley in the first minute following a goalmouth scramble but after a lot of pressure Hereford equalised on the half hour mark through David Brown, Brown, Brown. Stanley regained the lead when Paul Mullin scored his second with three minutes to go and Stanley won the game 2-1. The last game of the season saw Stanley travel to Hereford and play out a 0-0 draw. Stanley and Hereford also met at the IES in the FA Trophy third round. The game ended 0-0 and Stanley lost the replay 4-0 after Mike Flynn was sent off for allegedly elbowing a Hereford player.
Stanley and Hereford have played each other 4 times in the Conference with two wins to Stanley, one win to Hereford, and one draw.

Hereford citizens have the right to shoot Welshmen with crossbows, but only on a Sunday.
The Lord Mayor of Hereford has the right to herd sheep across Hightown.
In the 14th century babies in Herefordshire were baptised in cider on the grounds that it was cleaner than water. Many people now use the same argument to justify their weekend drinking habits.
This week the game’s on a Friday night
And the Bulls are coming to town
But it’s not us Reds that will get a fright
We’ll be jumping up and down
Come on you Reds!
