Always heard or found out what Stanley were doing from year to year but it was the FA Cup run in 1992 when I was 17 that drew me to watch my first Stanley game. Admittedly before that I was calling myself a Man U fan and was taken on several occaisons to Old Trafford as a young teenager. Also went to watch Blackburn a couple of times but I never called myself a Rovers fan. I was a Man U fan watching a game of football coz I couldnt go to Old Trafford. But since that cup game against Crewe at Ewood, Ive been nothing but Stanley - caught the train over to Accy for a home game soon after and that was me. Great club great people. Miss it a HELL of a lot.

Re: Home Town Team ?

Well now then, where to start?

I was born and bred in East Kilbride, about 10 miles outside of Glasgow, so I too am a Scot (and proud of it!).

I vaguely remember my Dad telling me about a football team that went out of the league the same year I was born, but up an untill I met Sarah I honestly believed that 'Accrington Stanley' was a made up name for that damned milk advert.........Imagine my complete surprise, after meeting my now wife, to find out that not only did Accrington actually exist, but that Stanley was a real team!!

I went to my first ever Stanley game just 6 short years ago, and now I wouldnt/couldnt support anyone else.

I consider myself a true convert!!

Re: Home Town Team ?

Just a further point about my feelings towards Stanley, in the light of current events.

I first watched Stanley with my dad in 1960 as they slipped towards oblivion.

I watched them in the mid-60's in the Lancs Combination with about 60 others as Peel Park crumbled before our eyes.

I watched them in the 70's when the Crown was just a muddy field with a rickety fence around it.

I watched them when they slipped into Unibond One playing at places like Flixton and Trafford.

Whatever, the future now holds for this club, good or bad, I will go on watching them, because I am, quite literally, "Stanley Til I Die" and I cannot change...and I hope that everyone who has contributed to this thread feels the same way too!

Re: Home Town Team ?

I was born and bred in Preston, moved to Accrington 17 years ago and now class it as my 'hometown'... I love it here... went to my first Stanley match in 2002 and have been hooked ever since...One of the things that kept me coming back were the friendly fans/staff at the club. My 10year old son is Stanley mad,He doesn't support any other team...

Despite being born in Blackburn QPH, I`ve lived in Accy all my life and since 1976 been stood behind the nets in all kinds of weather watching the rise from Lancashire Combination to the Football League with a mixture of hometown pride and the feeling of belonging to an elite club ( Which we are of course!)

I was born in Skipton but have lived all my life in Barnoldswick, started watching Stanley about 3 years ago and have hardly missed a home game since, been to quite a few away ones but not as many as i would like.
Stanley are the only team i support, my mates think i`m daft but they do come down and watch now and again, and have really enjoyed it when they have, but they havn`t been to any recent ones, obviously.

Re: Home Town Team ?

All my life (50+ years) I have lived in a quant little place that nestles between Blackburn & Bolton - DARWEN, where all your dreams come true!!!
As a Rovers supporter up to 1975, I then fell out with football for a few years. In 2002 an ex Stanley player dragged me kicking and screaming to the Crown Ground, and was instantly converted.

My mother-in-law lives in Osy. She attends every home match, and has been a supporter for the last 50 years.

Born and bred in Accy ( Roughlee 1946 ), went to Peel Park Infants then Juniors and lived on Burnley Road ( bottom of Peel Park Ave ), and went to my first Stanley game in 1958, trained with the Stanley juniors as goal keeper till the demise in '62 when we were told not to turn up for training anymore. Moved up to Bash and played for Baxenden United in the Accy Combination during the '60's. Work has moved me around, but now settled and working in the Lakes, but stioll manage to get to matches.

Re: Home Town Team ?

First game I ever saw was Man C, my home team, vs Newcastle U, FA cup final, 1955, on telly. Lost our full back, Jimmy Meadows, early into game, with a broken leg, no subs then, we lost, 3-1.
Following season, we were back, & beat Birmingham, 3-1, the famous game when Bert Trautmann, Man C keeper, broke his neck. From then on, I was City supporter....... even when most of my mates had turned to United, post Munich....I remember being at school, when, over the tannoy, we heard the dreadful news......
however, I came to work in Accrington in about 1965, & have been here ever since!
But, it's only been since our Unibond promotion that I have been a Stanley supporter, all thanks to my son-in-law, (he married my daughter in 2000)... he brought me to a game, & forgive me, I can't remember which one, or indeed, the result...... but, since then, I've been hooked, a season ticket holder for last 4/5 seasons....
And I intend to be for as long as possible..... Whichever league we are in!!!
