Re: How true is this?
For lancsdave!
Come June, Football League clubs will already be outlining fitness regimes and transfer targets to ensure a successful start to the new campaign.
Along with those tried and tested methods, League Two outfit Accrington Stanley FC have something a little bit different up their sleeve this summer: a visit from Buddhist leader the Dalai Lama.
As part of his eight-day tour of the UK, the global figure for peace will stop-off in Accrington, where there is a large Buddhist community. After racking up appearances at some of the biggest palaces and grandest political institutions the globe has to offer, the Dalai Lama will deliver a speech at 7,100-capacity Crown Ground.
If you’re interested in this particularly relaxed and theological pre-season opener, seated tickets are £30 and a spot in the*terrace in £15.
Richard Petty, associate director of Accrington Stanley, is positively cockahoop with the unusual booking. Despite the chance of any future tours to China being well and truly knocked on the head, Petty is happy to see the leader come to town.
He said: “I am thrilled to welcome the Buddhist community and the Dalai Lama to our ground. I will ask him to bless the pitch and give us divine assistance for next season.”
It’s not known whether the Nobel Peace Prize winner will deliver the request, but it does leave OTP asking serious questions about fair play.
Last year, Arsene Wenger condemned Manchester City for using their multi-billion pound owners to provide “financial doping” for their team. He might argue that Stanley are taking unsporting tactics to a whole new level with “spiritual doping”.
It’s something the FA must stamp down upon before religious leaders run rampant around the Football League delivering a celestial edge to their favourite clubs. How long until pictures surface of Chelsea tapping-up the Archbishop of Canterbury in a swanky hotel?
