Interesting news from Gigg Lane... I think !!

Printed in today's Bury Times... I guess this has been done to death in the past but wouldnt it be great if this could be done for Stanley ??? Should the deal go thru Bury MBC will have been MAIN kit sponsors for eight years, that's some commitment from their local council.

A NEW three-year deal is set to be announced today which will see Bury Council continue to financially support the town’s football club.
Under the agreement, the council will continue as the main sponsors of Bury FC.
The Bury Times understands the three-year extension could be worth more than £160,000 to the Shakers. The new sponsorship arrangements were due to go before Bury Council’s ruling executive last night. It has been the club’s major backer for five years.
Before the announcement, Peter Young, Bury FC’s commercial manager, said: “We are absolutely delighted the council is to apparently continue its sponsorship, although the decision has not yet been made.
“What is proposed will give us even more stability and, in the current climate, is fantastic.
“We’re going into our 125th season next season and throughout that time we’ve been proud to carry the town’s name.
“It’s fantastic to have the council on board again.”

It is indeed some commitment, unfortunately our council couldn't give a toss about the football team (unless there are freebies involved or the club are involved with a lot of good media attention).
There is also the aspect of the sponsorship money, council tax money. Hyndburn is not an affluent borough, so the council tax money has to be spent on more important things.

Councils are under increasing cash pressures from all sides.

Council tax payers who do not share our passion (and may be there are a few in Hyndburn) may want money prioritising to pressing social issues.

The trouble is when the political party of the other persuasion is elected they gleefully rip up agreements like this in order to critisise the previous administration, eight years ! It won't stick !

I'll probably be told it would be an administration nightmare but they could have an opt out levy on the council tax. Not sure how many people pay council tax but having an optional £1 a year on council tax to support the club could add up to a few thousand and work out to the council tax payer at about 2p a week. Even those of us who have other first choice teams would probably sign up to that.

I think that when HBC were shirt sponsors, some councillors kicked up holy hell, one in particular, mind you when they had the launch, the guy who did all the carping was first in the queue at the buffet
