Smile James Beattie of Accrington Stanley FC the Football League Manager of the Year

( Quote )There have been a lot of success stories in English Football this season. Brendan Rodgers and has incredible winning streak that brings Liverpool to the brink of history, Roberto Martinez leading Everton into a bold new era, and the grit of Sean Dyche guiding Burnley back to the Premier League promised land.
There is however one huge success story that flies under the radar screen of the mainstream media, at a club that has always been renowned for it’s obscurity. “Accrington Stanley, who are they?”
Former Premier League striker James Beattie took the reins in Accrington this summer, and certainly bit off more than many could chew. Whereas other former players like Tim Sherwood and Gareth Southgate have had ready-made Premier League squads full of millionaire’s and top level experience handed to them, Beattie had a very different situation on his hands.
The team he took over had finished 18th in the League Two, and manager Leam Richardson had left the club. In addition, the three leading goal scorers from the previous season would be unavailable to him.

Padraig Amond and Romauld Boco had left for Morecambe and Plymouth respectively, while Beattie himself had withdrawn to focus on the sizable manageable task at hand. This trio had accounted for exactly half of the team’s goals during the 2012/2013 season. In addition the talismanic Lee Molyneux and Francis Jeffers had all headed through the exit door.

With the lowest wage budget in the Football League, Beattie had to quickly build a team to compete to stay in the Football League. He quickly proved his ability to excite players about the challenge at the Store First Stadium, as well as motivate the group already on his hands.
Currently, Accrington sit 16th in the League Two table having secured safety with the club’s first ever victory over Oxford United.
As an example of his work in the transfer and loan market, six players who featured in the recent historic win at Oxford were signed by Beattie.
The goal power has returned through Kal Naismith (10 goals) Kayode Odejayi (nine goals), Danny Webber (three goals) and George Bowerman (three goals). All these players were brought into the club by Beattie, and in addition he secured the return of Molyneux, who accounted for another six goals. These signings were made after Beattie paid off the club's tax bill from his own pocket to lift a transfer embargo imposed by the league.
It is also worth noting when Accrington have scored their goals. Stanley have netted 12 goals during the season in second half injury time, many of which have secured vital points.
It is up for debate whether the reason for this is spirit, fitness or a relentless belief right to the end. It is obvious though however you look at it, that Beattie and his management staff of Paul Stephenson and Paul Lodge have done a fantastic job of leading their players and instilling a culture of determination.
After winning none of his first 12 league games, Beattie maintained his belief in his squad, and has led them on a consistent surge up the table since. When you look higher up the leagues, it is apparent just how impressive this job is.
At Manchester United, David Moyes took over a defending league champion, lost no players and added world class talent in Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini. Despite this, he left his post recently with many still claiming he “needed time” to succeed.
At Tottenham Hotspur, Tim Sherwood rushed to question the character of his players after his first heavy defeat. A move that does not inspire the kind of belief and spirit that Beattie has managed at Accrington.
Premier League veteran Nicky Hunt was Beattie’s first permanent signing, and spoke highly of his manger in a recent interview with BBC Sport.
“He has become a unique manager with his own unique style,” said Hunt. “He always says his piece and conducts himself in a way that us, as players, listen to and it’s showing on the pitch.”
If the results continue to show it will be a less a case of “who are they,” and more of another well coined phrase. “On Stanley On.”( Unquote)

What James has done to stanley from been rock bottom to finishing in a mid table position is nothing short of a football mirical IMHO and should be honored by the football league managers or who ever picks manager of the season

Through Stanley tinted glasses I can see various bits I agree with in the article but taking them off the one in League Two that has transformed a Club going nowhere is Russ Wilcox at Scunthorpe setting a World Record on the way.
