John Coleman on BBC Radio 4 tonight

Barnet fan in peace...

Just to let you know that you can hear John Coleman on BBC Radio 4's nightly arts programme Front Row tonight (Monday 13 September) at 7.15pm.

John is discussing The Game, Harold Brighouse's long-forgotten 1913 play about a football club, which is being staged in a new production by the Northern Broadsides company.

Many of the play's themes - money, club loyalty and a player who is asked to throw a match - seem as relevant as ever.

You can also listen to the programme on the Front Row website after the broadcast.

Re: John Coleman on BBC Radio 4 tonight

I happened to hear Professor Coleman discussing the long lost play (written in 1913 about a star player at a famous Lancashire club - Blackton Rovers!) with Barry Rutter and thought he gave a highly creditable performance. Let's hope the BBC doesn't entice him away with a two year contract as a theatre critic. He was particularly sincere, I felt, when he mentioned the recent loss of a Stanley fan and how the club and its supporters are as family. Well done, Coley, makes a change to hear a manager talk and not just mouth the normal meaningless, post-match sound-bites.

Yeah, he was dam good. This was the BBC radio 4 flagship arts programme. Besides a pretty sharp comparative analysis of Brighouse's forgotten play (whose best known work was Hobson's Choice) with contemporary foofball, he got in the challenges facing Stanley and spoke with great sincerity and sensitivity about the recent tragic loss.

Anyone who missed it can still pick it up on the BBC i player.
