Latest on George Stewart - our greatest striker

I have tracked down in Scotland our greatest ever striker George Stewart.

George's wife Anna (82) told me he had headed the ball more often than he shot (152 goals in 208 games tell us he did both to lethal effect) and the family blame George's hospitalisation 6 months ago with Alzheimer's on years of head contact against heavy leather balls.

George is happy enough in himself but remembers nothing of his football career.

She on the other hand remembers a very happy time under Walter Galbraith at Accrington where the people were all very friendly and they had good crowds.

She remembered Charlie [Sneddon] and the names Jimmy Harrower, Tommy McQueen, John Ryden, and Ian Brydon were also remembered.

I assured her that George would always remain a true goal scoring legend greatly appreciated in Accrington and asked her to convey this to their four sons and if possible to George himself.

I wonder if the Club and the Supporters' Club could organise something to send the family by way of appreciation.

I can be PM'd.

Good idea, Haggis. Let's hope something can be organised for a true Stanley legend.

I have to agree, that it would be great to organise something for a stanley legend and their family and tbh I would be more than happy to deliver it myself and also find out what great stories & memorabilia they may like to be included in the exhibition

I remember him well, a prolific goalscorer. If i remember correctly we signed him from Worcester City who then were in the Southern League.
Happy Days.

A true Stanley legend in what was, without doubt, the best Stanley team ever to wear the red and white.

I think he was playing there by arrangement with his parent club St Mirren so Stanley had to pay 2 fees which I believe totalled £1500.

I think he may still be the second fastest man in Football League history to get 100 goals for his club ie Accrington (a mere 123 games!)

It appears Alzheimer's is becoming more widespread. This was some advice in today's Independent:

It would be nice if there could be some kind of permanent acknowledgement of him at the club. Like naming a stand after him. There's no doubt he's the most significant name in the club's history.

I have sent the club 3 emails on the subject but no word.

May be Tin Monkey is right and George Stewart belonged to a different Accrington Stanley.

A quick memory Haggis!!...
I remember seeing both Tommy Lawton and George Stewart scoring with 'Headers' !.
It was always maintained that Tommy was the finest
exponent of this 'art'...But am I wrong in asserting that Geordie was even better than Tommy when it came to rising to a cross (perhaps from Joe Devlin!)..
and
either powering it, or subtly glancing it beyond the Keepers reach ?..
All I can say is 'Thanks for these Memories George, and for many more wonderful flashbacks from your sterling services to Accrington Stanley' !.

WHAT A LEGEND !!
