To paraphrase or not as the case is , Accrington’s most famous son, “We didn’t flipping murder ‘em” But we won comfortably enough, even if we did bumble around somewhat for the opening half an hour.
But all in all, a satisfactory performance and result, the added bonus of the three teams above us dropping points too, but with far stiffer tasks looming over the horizon.
Having Wilkinson back is massive boost. There are a fair few good central defenders in this league, but if there’s a better one than him, have yet to see him. One good thing about his suspension, is hopefully he has sorted out the minor injuries he was been suffering with in recent weeks.
Guttridge, once he starting receiving the ball, played like the little master he is. In France, I believe they call Zidane, the poor man’s Guttridge. Even if both his legs fell off and had to sit on a chair on the half way line, would be worth his place the way he cajoles his team mates – like a conductor with his orchestra. In a pitifully negative division, his class shines brightly in the glooming.
Lee has come in and looked sharp. He’s very eager doesn’t give defenders time to settle, got a good football brain and looks a natural finisher. If there is something good to come out the nonsensical Cullen situation, it’s getting Lee onboard. He needs to work on his fitness and will doubtless improve, but he looks like a player who is on the books of a top flight club.
Good old Accrington, they have been jolly spiffing this week. Sending Burton for a burton on Tuesday and then giving up at 2-0 today. Let’s hope their Lancastrian rivals Bury and Morecambe will follow suit in the next week.
We started with a diamond formation, but didn’t sparkle at all in the early stages. We looked very disjointed without any width – apart from the full backs. Accrington by far the better footballing side, that said we gave them an alarming amount of space. However their goal threat didn’t match their attractive football.
We went very direct, the idea of using Stockley as a battering ram is ludicrous at the best of times, but even more so when Guttridge is on the field it looks stunningly retarded. Give Guttridge the ball and he will destroy teams. It’s as simple as peas. Funnily enough when we switched formation – Lee on the right, Howells on the left, we stretched Accrington, got Guttridge on the ball and we looked more of a threat. Who would have thought it? *DEEP SIGH*.
Stockley did well again despite playing in a role with service which doesn't suit him, pleased he scored to shut up the moaning gits who somehow expect him to beat two defenders one of whom, Winnard spent most of the first half on the back, naturally missed by the referee. Some people are they born stupid or does it come with plenty of practise?
Not that my opinion counts for anything, but all things being equal, think Stockley has done enough to earn a full time contract, if terms can be agreed. Benson was smashing last season, but at the age of 951 his powers must be on the wane. Stockley isn't the finished article by any means, but has plenty of promise.
Wilkinson, Howells and Lee started in place of Lacey, Oduwa and Drury (It’s a miracle) from the side which lost at Wimbledon last weekend. Personally would prefer Oduwa to start at home, with Howells in the harder away games. But Howells played very well, his delivery good and as ever linked up well with Griffiths.
Oduwa against their replacement right back Crooks would have been comedy gold. Talk about the tortoise and the hair (actually a tortoise with a bad leg has more pace and football talent than the hapless Crooks).
Justham in goal. Back four of Harriman, Franks, Wilkinson, and Griffiths. Smith played in front of the back four, McGeehan and Howells in front of him, Guttridge the farthest forward of the quartet with Stockley and Lee up front.
Fair play to John Still for changing the formation early on, as other managers would have stubbornley refused to change it. The lack of width was a problem, as was our ball retention, we looked very edgy, and thrashing the ball forward far too often, without thought and care. Confidence or lack of is naturally an issue. We always look a far superior side when we get the ball down. (Not that I’m labouring a point. That’s a lie – as I do).
Accrington, playing a 4-4-1-1 set up, at least came out to try and play football, didn’t waste too much time. For their meagre resources a mid table finish is a decent effort, being within forty miles of so many clubs they don’t stand much a of a chance of that changing. Windass is a chip off the old block. Decent player, but likes a moan. Nothing good is likely to come from Dean Windass' bodily fluids though. Mingola started well on the right wing, but failed badly as did his team mates. Naismith put a few corking cross field passes. Barry and Joyce are reasonable players in midfield, if a bit light weight. They do lack a goal threat badly.
After Windass’ optimistic wild hoof, the visitors settled quickly. McGeehan was rattling a few challenges, but even Smith look off his game to begin with. We couldn’t get going and Accrington revelled in the space we allowed. Barry’s angled through ball towards Windass was skilfully cut out by Wilkinson.
Gornell wasted a glorious early chance, a perfectly weighted ball split our square defence, Gornell looked offside, but one ball shouldn’t open up a defence so easily, Justham did very well to stand up and Gornell shoot into him, the loose ball fell to Windass but Griffiths managed to block the effort. Justham is a good young goalkeeper - his kick is like a mule shame his radar can be iffy; he’s unlucky to be at a club with a keeper with Tyler’s calibre in front of him.
Howells’ early pass found Lee, nimble turn before his curling effort was blocked by Winnard. Another good delivery by Howells on the right, well it would have been if anyone would have moved, the ball safely through to Davies.
Stockley was kicked up in the air by Atkinson, near the box towards the right. The referee marked out a good 15 yards before whipping out his magic spray. Howells’ flicked free kicked was aimed and found Wilkinson but he used Gornell as a step ladder.
A cross whipped in by Mingola, Justham flapped at the cross, but reacted to pounce on the loose ball and hold onto with Gornell nearby.
A darting run forward by Griffiths, gave Smith possession, into Guttridge turning away into space but his through ball wasn’t read quick enough by Stockley.
Wilkinson penalised for a foul on Windass. Joyce hoisted the free kick into the box, Wilkinson headed away, but not far away, as Mingola centre towards Windass, and Franks stabbed behind. Franks had a steady enough game, but it’s a case of looking decent against a weak forward line again. Good forwards (not many in this league admittedly) will destroy him.
Naismith’s pearling cross field ball found Mingola, the ball in knocked behind by Griffiths. From Windass’ deep corner the white shirts waited deep in the box, Stockley messed up his clearance, Naismith found Proctor to Windass low flick easily saved by Justham. Gornell couldn’t direct his flying header from Naismith’s run down the left flank. A good positive run forward by Windass beating Smith and looking like Wilkinson was in trouble but got a vital foot in to touch it behind.
Incredibly the referee finally spotted Winnard’s repeated sexual assault on Stockley, the free kick by Lee wasn’t worth waiting for, and Keith Keane’s guttering was more in danger than Davies’ goal.
We looked more threatening down the left through the Griffiths and Howells axis, Griffiths bringing the ball forward, inviting centre by Howells, Lee got enough on the ball to test Davies, who made a meal of a rather simple save. Wilkinson’s hoof down the line was wonderfully controlled and hit across by Griffiths, which Atkinson walloped clear.
We started to build a bit of pressure, but hadn’t done enough to warrant taking the lead. Guttridge’s far post corner, Davies’s indecision was final allowing Stockley who had to twist and turn to connect with the ball to turn it into the net.
Windass’ pass almost found Gornell, but Franks shepherded it back to Justham. Stockley’s beau Winnard was forced off through just before the break, replaced by Crooks, a gangling useless lump at right back.
Franks caught out of position and pulled Windass back. It was probably worth a booking, but terrible refereeing when Windass told him to book Franks, as initially it looked like the free kick was deemed sufficient punishment.
So, after a disjointed half, we went in 1-0. It was noticed how early the visitors come out. Although in truth, we were never in danger after Stockley opened the scoring and ran out comfortable winners with an improved second half showing.
Atkinson was in the book for a foul on Lee. Howells’ corner was played into a decent area but Atkinson’s presence put off McGeehan and the header was wayward of the target.
The change in formation suited us and particularly Guttridge. He has a good understanding with Lee already. But good players make Football a simple game, where as poor ones make it looked devilishly difficult.
Davies receiving a simple back pass by Crooks made a complete hash of his clearance finding Guttridge, who swiftly fed Lee with an inch perfect pass, Lee got goal side of Naismith; to be honest Lee seemed to go down easily with contact by Naismith after a heavy touch, so surely it’s either a penalty or book Lee for diving? The incident was right in front of the lino on the Main Stand side.
Atkinson’s long ball pinged towards Windass beating McGeehan before booted over. We had another referee who could be politely described as erratic or useless. Crooks was treated on the pitch for a “ head” injury, so why did he limp off? Admittedly he did get treatment for a bloody nose. Conneely received the ball just before Guttridge from Harriman’s low centre. Barry’s clip, there was some misunderstanding between Justham and Wilkinson but the ball ran through to the keeper.
Lee finished well from Griffiths’ pass but located the net after being awarded offside.
Conneely’s pass was skilfully flicked through to Windass, a good set up touch, dragging the shot wide.
Griffiths’ throw down the line was bravely headed on by Stockley before taking a whack from Crooks, Lee got on the ball down the left channel unselfishly squared to Guttridge who side footed home.
Game over. Accrington were a busted flush. We saw out the match easily enough. Harriman found McGeehan’s powerful run forward, an equally powerful cross towards the back post, was tapped back by Howells but wide, although judging by his appeal the ball came from an Accrington defender.
Lee then was booked for winning the ball against Atkinson. Lee made way for Lawless and his beard to have another outing.
Proctor’s pass found Mingola having the beating of Griffiths, his pull back played behind by Wilkinson.
Mark “He’ll never playing for this club again, oh look he’s on the bench today” Cullen replaced Stockley. The situation was been badly handled and a few heads need being banged together. Cullen looked lively as he has in recent games. Windass finally in the book for a tug on Lawless, soon followed by Crooks for a deliberate handball.
Maguire who also looked bright in his cameo, Franks denied a fine Maguire run with a strong tackle. Guttridge was tripped up by Joyce; Cullen’s flicked header tested Davies from Guttridge’s free kick.
Three minutes were added, Cullen’s frustrations appear summed up with a ferocious strike which Davies did well to tip over.
