Re: Luton Town Game Thread

Went to the game today and the lads played excellent, the accy crowd around me were in full voice and made more noise than luton(the chant about luton being in the championshp and messing it up was a good one!) i couldn't settle in those last ten mins as had last week on back of my mind but they came through and we had a great game and kenny arthur made a great save near the final whistle!! Time for my bottle to celebrate.. Well done Stanley.

Re: Luton Town Game Thread

They weren't just in the Championship they were a side to be reckoned with and a place regularly left with nul points. I remember they were at the top of the Championship for much of our early days back in the League - then it went wrong.

I cast my mind back to a very depressing last day of the season visit to Hillsborough in April 1990 when Forest won 3-0 and Luton's first away win for 18 months inflicted Derby's first home defeat for 18 months to reprieve Luton for another season and send Sheffield Wednesday crashing out of the top flight on goal difference notwithstanding 43 points on the board.

Re: Luton Town Game Thread

only the second game I have seen this season but I was impressed more than anything else with the movement of the front players.

Gornell, Miles and Ryan gave the Hatters defence more to think about than just trying to prevent Mullin from playing. This allowed Mullin to play! Jimmy Ryan is an absolute gem, he runs, chases, and harries after every loose ball. He can also play a bit when running forward. I dont know what his position is but I suspect it is not winger - but he does a cracking job out there. If he ever gets chance to play through the middle then it won't be long before we are saying "Ian who?" Jimmy will be our next high priced export through the ever revolving transfer door.

Luton posed a few problems when they actually got to the penalty box but they never seemed to be an actual threat in the game other than a brief spell when they scored. I f the second goal had not been disallowed then I fear we may have disintegreted again, but the linesmans decision seemed to give us a new lease of life. We played good, fast flowing, controlled football. We weren't afraid to go backwards to retain possession and tried to find some penetrating passes. Don't get me wrong - we aint Brazil, but this Stanley is a joy to watch. Gornell will go on to better things, as will Jimmy Ryan. Griffiths won't break into the Blackburn team but will probably make a decent Championship player. With a bit of luck we can keep hold of these lads and try to get something out of the season. The squad need to realise that last week was disappointing but a one-off. They outplayed a good Bradford team for long spells and did a number on Luton in a difficult stadium.

Quick mention to Kenny and Phil Edwards for the frenetic defending at the end of the game. Phil never deserved to make that tackle but did. Well done.

Also to the Luton fans - you were great for 15 minutes what happened? The Ultras didn't outdo the noise that they made but again were constant and noisy throughout. Well done.

Oh yeah and the 'LOL' moments? For some reason Luton groundstaff seem to need to put the sprinklers on at half time. Except there was a kids match going on at the time!

Re: Luton Town Game Thread

Manager Mick Harford had no complaints following the defeat against Accrington after admitting his Luton team hadn't been at the races.
Harford: Demands better

Terry Gornell hit the winner in the 55th minute of Saturday's League Two clash at Kenilworth Road after Paul Mullin's opener had been cancelled out by Asa Hall's acrobatic effort before half-time.
Harford said: "It was hugely disappointing. We didn't start particularly well and they deserved to go 1-0 up.
"We looked sloppy and sluggish and didn't the knock the ball around all afternoon.
"We didn't get the ball in behind them or turn them, we were edgy and looked nervous in possession.
"It's a bit of a low for us because we should be beating teams like this when they come down here but we don't seem to be able to do that."

No, but he had Procky ready to come on with one minute of stoppage time left but Luton got a free kick and Coley doesn't make substitutions at set pieces and then the final whistle went before he could get him on. Thank goodness.

I think a lot of the difference on Saturday was due to enforced changes with Cav being suspended. Edwards is better at defending than Cav and is usually in the right place instead of being posted missing, but what will happen on Tuesday? Will Coley keep the same winning team or will he tinker and bring Cav back. I suspect I know the answer to that. Also Rocky will be available again.

It isn't fair to label Cav as a liability. By all accounts he had a bad game against Bradford, but that is definitely not the story of his season so far. He's had some very good form. It was Edwards' fault alone for one of Bradford's goals but no one is linching him? Edwards is a better centre half than Cav but certainly not a better full back.

Who labelled Cav as a liability? I didn't. But as you mention it Cav has had more bad games than good games in the last few seasons. He races up field and when he loses the ball he trots back. Edwards has to leave his post at centre half and cover for Cav at full back until he trots back. Which Bradford goal was Edwards fault alone?

Don't know which games you been watching shaker, but Cav HAS been a liability for the last few games he has played in especially this season. Remember the weak back pass that allowed an attacking player to come in and steal the ball to score! I do!! He has a habit of wandering up to attack and forgetting to track back to help the defenders. Even Paul Mullin tracks back more than Cav. Edwards is a better player than Cav full stop!!!! It says it all when you consider Cav has played 5 games this season and been booked 5 times, yet how many has Phil Edwards played and how many times has he been booked?

On a personal note, I hope John Coleman sticks with a winning team for tomorrow and keeps Cav and Rocky off the field altogether. Make them win their places back on merit - not give them their places in a successful team.
