myself and ange have been discussing how previous stanley "stars" have progressed / digressed their careers since leaving our hallowed grounds and have come to the conclusion that none have really progressed their careers i.e. craney (fleetwood) gaz roberts(huddersfield but certainly not playing) bobby grant (scunny never started) symesy (ballmouth...injured again) so i do hope that Jimmy who i believe is without doubt playing below his level will take a step back and look at the bigger picture and realise that this is not about today but tomorrow and beyond when it comes to future,imminent contract talks and i'm sure that his parents will advise him accordingly because i would hate another of our protegees to go down the line of others that have failed to reach their footballing potential whilst searching for a quick quid

Agree with the vast majority of what you're saying Nige, but Gary Roberts was a regular in the Huddersfield first team until he suffered a broken arm a few weeks ago. I believe he is now quite well on the road to recovery. Maybe he deserves a bit better than "Huddersfield but certainly not playing"

very few seem to have improved nige, exception Ormerod but that was yonks ago, agree wi yer comments, but nowt surprises me, its called "Life"

plus ormerod went from nowhere to league footy, don't blame anyone fer that.

Very good post Nige......I'd agree that with the exception of Roberts and as Cashy points out, Brett Ormerod, very few of recent bright young things have gone on to rip up trees..... so to speak.

I think a balance has to be acquired by looking at the bigger picture....With the home attendances as they are at the moment, the club has to look at nurturing talent like we have at the moment and look to get the best possible price when the talent moves on to supposedly better things.

That said some of the examples have ended up plying their trade below where we are now and; there was one notable exception from the lads Nige mentioned... a.k.a. Anthony Barry....!!!

It's nice to hear that the club are supposedly putting better offers of longer term contracts on the table to the likes of Jimmy Ryan and Ray Putterell....It would be even nicer to think that we could keep hold of the likes of such players for a couple of years, in which time we could hopefully move another rung up the ladder into League One and hopefully the gates would regularly get to somewhere around the mark that they were during the latter part of the Conference winning season.

That said....it will always be the lot of lower league clubs (leagues one and two) to find these unpolished diamonds and brush them up and sell them on. Crewe and to a lesser extent..Bury have done it for years !! It would be nice to think that the club seems to have learned from the mistake of not offering the likes of Bobby Grant and Symes longer term deals and seeing them go on the cheap; and in Symes' case for zilch

A final thought... I wonder if Coley has:

a) pondered the thought of getting Bobby back on loan. As he doesn't seem to figure much in Scunthorpe's plans ( and the fact that whoever negotiated the clauses on that deal wants shooting !!- by that I mean the clause which stipulates that Scunthorpe pay an extra amount if they got promoted to the Premier league!!!) what about getting them to loan him back to us till the end of the season with Scunthorpe paying a large part of Bobby's wage????. Surely better for the lad to get regular first team football rather than reserve team games and the obvious benefit for ourselves....Haven't Rochdale done that with a few of the lads they've sold recently???

b) Contemplated giving Chris Turner a decent run...The lad has shown he has the talent and for me at least, I think is a better prospect than McConville????

fair comment fella didn't realise gaz broke his arm , easilly the best player i have ever seen in a stanley shirt,nice lad and i wish him all the best

Seems to be the case with most Lancashire teams, who has left Blackburn and done well for themselves?
David Bentley hardly starts at Tottenham and would probably be let go if someone offered for him.
Roque Santa Cruz has been told he won't play for City again.
Damien Duff is playing for Fulham, hardly a step up.
Alan Shearer didn't win anymore trophies at Newcastle so I don't think he counts.

In fact I can only think of Brad Friedel who has gone on to do marginally better!

I would think as the Club stands at the moment we have to be a "selling club" until such time as it is self sufficent in terms of attendances & the commercial side of things.

We also have to realise with football it can be a short lived career, the ones that go on to become "household names" are few and far between one look at the Stanley Squad says that in terms of their "neurturing" and where they have come from in some cases through fantastic academies at the likes of Liverpool, Blackburn etc.

John & Jimmy have no choice but to look at players who have been released by other teams, their record at finding gems is second to none but as others have already said their has to be a balance of polishing these gems, watching them flourish taking the team forward then in essence watching them potentially walk away on the cheap.

Which Then brings about the start of a re-building job as we saw in the Summer.

We have limited resources, nomadic training with no fixed facilities & small attendances.

What we do have is a super management team, what looks like a great team spirit and a great record of over achievement when the odds are stacked against us on the pitch we survive and better it.

Its a difficult situation for any club and player but to say others that have left Stanley have done nothing is abit wide of the mark.

Roberts was voted Huddersfield's player of the year last year and is without doubt 1 of their best players according to my mate who is a terriers season ticket holder.

Symes has scored a few for Bournemouth already and its a shame he got an injury but no doubt in my mind he will be back in the team when he comes back.

As for Grant its a shame that Scunthorpe have changed their manager but he is at least on the bench every week.

Unfortunately every club in the world with the exception of about 6 clubs Man U, Man C, Madrid etc cannot turn a silly offer down for any player, and its the same for us, all be it on a much smaller scale.

Fingers crossed we can tie Putterill down till at LEAST the summer time if not longer then he can finally have a good run of 20-30 games and really show us what he can do.

As for Jimmy I have been saying it for years, he is obviously way to good for League 2 and is a fantastic individual, but im hoping that if we can get him to sign for next season ASAP then if somebody comes in for him we can command a sizeable fee (ie 18 months of a contract +) IF somebody was to make an offer.
