Regarding shape,I think Coley learned a lot from playing 4-2-3-1,you dont conceed many, but dont score many.
Our fortunes changed when we went 4-3-3 and made the play-offs.
There is no set formation that will guarntee you success, and is really based on what type of players you have.
Cooky will know his players by now,and will set them up accordingly

Hope yer right about him, can see the potential, but have me doubts.

Re: Nice and early Carlisle United Match Thread......
Carlisle always gave us a tough game at their ground and even won at Hillsborough the season before last.
Such a narrow defeat at such a good team's ground and bossing the play for a good chunk of the second half is encouraging rather than anything else.

Sorry, but I just don't get that. Are you saying that some players don't want to be as good as they possibly can be?

If that is correct, something went wrong on Saturday. I know I've said this before, but talk of formations leaves me cold. I have no idea what formation Carlisle played - for all I know, it could have been 1-8-1. What I do know is that each individual Carlisle player knew where his colleagues were - and, possibly more importantly, where they would be in the following few seconds. That could not be said about Stanley.
As a team, we did not threaten Carlisle. On the positive side, as a team, we worked extremely hard and for much of the game contained a superior opposition.

Whilst i wasn't at Carlisle, i don't get that? according to reports stanley had a decent second half spell, where they had a few goal attempts, That aint a threat?

Re: Nice and early Carlisle United Match Thread......
RR,what I am saying is that Charlie has the ability and technique to play at a far higher level, but seems to go into auto pilot, and just cruises thro games. He should be making more of his ability and dominating games.
I accept he is played out of position, but it frustrates me as I know how good he is.
He is fit, fast, good football brain ,so he just needs more application IMHO .
Regarding shape or formations, that comes with experience, and players carrying out the gaffers instructions.
Believe it or not it's hard to change,if you have been brought up playing a certain way,and asked to change.
Some prem players find it hard !!!

Read what I wrote : "As a team, we didn't threaten Carlisle".
And now read the match report again. We had two meaningful attempts on goal. One was an individual effort from Chippendale; the other was a Chippendale free kick.
Yes, we had a decent second half spell. No, we didn't have "a few" goal attempts. We had two - and neither was a team effort.
