Re: No bums at Burtons
"...I can confirm that we intend to erect covering over the Clayton End. We have had a couple of meetings this week and we are looking to get something in place as soon as possible, hopefully before the weather starts to turn. I know it is something that has been requested for a long while and I hope that the fans that brave all weathers to come and watch us will accept it as a thank you...Coley has talked about making this stadium a fortress for our home games and good vocal support is a big part of that, I am sure this will help to keep in the noise."
- Eric Whalley, programme notes, Woking match, Sept 27th, 2003
OK, Eric, three years is long enough, time you put your words into action!

Re: No bums at Burtons
42 months later and counting... still no roof
Also does anyone think that the terraces get too crowded these last few games. Its hard to move about and the gangways arnt clear, surely the steps should be clear for health and safety reasons. Could they not be extended another couple of barriers back. It would add more than a thousand on the capacity and people can actually breathe. There will be more fans next year so this will be even worse

Re: No bums at Burtons
I can't believe that people are complaining of overcrowding at recent matches. Nobody wants to see a return to swaying masses and collapsing barriers, but we are a million miles away from that scenario. No wonder Hereford fans take the p**s - we haven't had a "crowd" at any match yet. What do you want - space to swing a cat or something?

Re: No bums at Burtons
I take your point FC. But I aint interested in extra steps or any other ground improvements until such time as we get a roof.
estimated cost of £100 000
divided by 24 home league matches next season
divided by £12 (this years adult admission)
equals 347 people
maybe we wont get an extra 347 new people coming on just because we have a roof, but what it will do is keep 347 people coming if the weather is crap one saturday. That, on top of any new people who turn up, on top of the increased atmosphere that players, management and Eric have all asked for repeatedly, surely makes the roof pay for itself within a year. Even if the bloody thing has to be pulled down in two or three years to make way for a bigger stand, it is surely an investment. And it would appease an increasingly frustrated customer base. If customers stopped coming to my shop as frequently as they could because they didn't like the decor, I would change it.
We are not asking for the Nou Camp, we are not asking for something that can't be done. We are asking for something that is a basic right for human beings, a roof over our heads.
Since the Coley years we have seen crowds grow. Now you can't put an umbrella up behind the Clayton End when there is more than 1800 on. We have been told we are getting one. Repeatedly. We want to know when we are getting it. We are not threatening revolution, but Willie Miller has already stated that the flags will be absent next year. How long until the crowd is also absent?

Re: No bums at Burtons
Where does Mr Khan fit in all this. The way they trumpeted the "sponsorship" of the terrace gave me the impression the bloke was doshing out for the roof and all they needed to do was dot the i's and cross the t's on the plans?????????? Apparently not.

Re: No bums at Burtons
He paid for the right to name the stand. Not to pay for the stand itself. Like Graham Charnley paid for the right to name the ground the Interlink Express Stadium.. he didn't actually pay for the ground.

Re: No bums at Burtons
Hmmm! No disrespect, but the way it was announced on the pitch with the long rambling intro, etc, gave the impression thata it amounted to much more than a few quid in sponsorship. Too much topspin on that announcement one suspects.

Re: No bums at Burtons
What about the Xmas draw we did a couple of seasons ago?
I seem to remember a lot of effort going in to sell those tickets!!!
Plus the £1000 raised and donated by the Supporters Club! If I remember rightly towards the new toilets in the Clayton End

Taken from the official site news archive (18th Nov 03)
INIT 2 WINIT Xmas draw
Tickets for the Accrington Stanley Xmas draw are now available from the club shop and around the ground on matchdays. Tickets are 20 pence each or £1 per book. INIT 2 WINIT is in aid of the Clayton End Stand Cover. The draw will be made on Boxing day 26th Dec, 2003 at the Stanley Sports Bar.

Why? I am guessing it was a lot more than a few quid... are you suggesting that because it was a big amount then it should be used to pay for the roof?
eg: If you sponsor the dugouts for 50 quid then you get to advertise... but if you sponser them for 5 thousand quid you get to own them?. is that your way of thinking?
I am guessing the announcement was true and it was a big amount... It still stands that he only paid for the right to name it.. not build it.

Re: No bums at Burtons
Guy buys the naming rights for a terrace which is crying out for a roof, one assumes that the money will go towards the roof and improvements to the bit he's sponsored, not into some financial Bermuda Triangle. Guess I've put 2 & 2 together and made 5.

Re: No bums at Burtons
You and 99% of accy fans mate But then again I aint a club spokesman am I ... I am just saying what I know to be true.. Lots of others post what they know to be true and sometimes is/isn't But I am 100% confident he paid for naming rights only and not actually paid for work on the roof. I have had occasion to speak to the guy BTW, He sponsored my website a few years ago. He would quite happily put a large amount of money into the club for whatever reason ... top bloke

Re: No bums at Burtons
Moaning seems horrible after the season we have had, but I think the players deserve to have the biggest backing from the terrace that they have had, for the coming season. The only way to turn the volume up is for a roof over the home end! Coley's said before that he wants a fortress & that the "guys behind the goal" are fantastic, well help us out!
We can't let it lie unfortunately
Think if we have no definate plans then tell us, tell us there's no money yet? But don't tell us its coming soon only for another three years to whizz by:engsmil:

Re: No bums at Burtons
I'm sure Mr Khan is a top bloke -- wouldn't it be nice to see his mum's name on top of a new roof though! Has anyone any firm idea how much a roof would cost. I've heard 50 grand mentioned, 100 grand, etc Nailing down a price might put things in perspective.
