Re: Oldham snap up Rachubka
[QUOTE=Revived Red;1075370]Why don't you read what I wrote instead of what you think I wrote? I never said Bavs was better or worse than anyone else, and I certainly couldn't compare him with Wilson because I have never seen Wilson play. Yes, Bavs has made silly mistakes - tell me a goalkeeper who hasn't. Joe Hart, David Seaman, Iker Casillas, even Lev Yashin. Sadly goalkeepers are too often judged on silly mistakes as Gary Sprake can testify. Forget this stuff about the goalkeeper dominating his box and such like. The goalkeeper's first priority is to prevent that ball going into the net. Before his injury last season, Bavs did exactly that superbly. I suggest you read those match reports once again. I'll say it again - simply and without suggesting any comparisons. Bavs does not deserve the bashing.[/QUOTI
I suppose all the refs reports on matches are accurate as well.I don't need to read the match reports again as my eyes are obviously far better focused than yours. As for forget goalkeepers dominating their box that is a poor footballing statement.Any goalkeeper who has total domination of his box in a game can only then concede a goal from outside the box a big plus in any game, that's why Brian Clough always said Shilton was worth a goal start.

Re: Oldham snap up Rachubka
Is the 2 year contract not because he will be coaching as well as playing, or have I got my wires crossed?

Re: Oldham snap up Rachubka
Bavs has superb shot stopping skills and agility, on a par with any other goalkeeper we've had over the past few years. Some other aspects of his game aren't the greatest but if they were then he would have left us years ago and moved up the ladder. He has been a superb servant to the club and in the last couple of years has made the most of the 1st team opportunities that have come his way.
He's a cracking number 2, but I've no worries about him being number 1 neither. Some of the keeper bashing that he's suffered from over the last 7 years has been unfair because he has played behind some awful back fours in that time.

From the report on the Cardiff game:
the Premier League side almost made the breakthrough when Bettinelli was caught out of his goal trying to stop Maynard
Maynard got the ball in the area and showed his skill by flicking the ball over the Stanley defence and firing low into the bottom of the net
Gestede doubled the Bluebirds advantage, by catching the defence cold and slotting home from close range
From the report on the Burton game:
Adam McGurk’s shot from a central free-kick was spilled by Bettinelli but no-one was able to follow up.
And when Burton did score, that was from well inside the goal area.
Total domination of his box???

Re: Oldham snap up Rachubka
Perhaps one should learn to read and digest the context of the post before replying.Maybe you should read a few of Bavs write ups.Lets see how goals conceded tally up with each keeper after a few more games.Maybe just maybe a few of you will take your blinkers off when you realise you're not racehorses!

Re: Oldham snap up Rachubka
well as you know I love a good stat, particularly if it gets to prove a point. Unfortunately I couldn't find a stat to use in Bavs defence (pardon the pun).
Cameron Belford had an average of 40% clean sheets (2 in 5)
Alex Cisak had an average of 33% (9 in 27 games)
Kenny Arthur had an average of 28% clean sheets (20 in 71 games)
Paul Rachubka had an average of 26% (6 in 23)
Sean Murdoch had an average of 27% (4 in 15 games)
Ian Dunbavin has an average of 22% (33 in 147 games)
Dean Bouzanis had an average of 21% (4 in 19 games)
The team itself has an average of 20.6% (78 from 378 games since joining the FL)
Goalkeepers are judged on their clean sheets and we learn that Bavs is not the best goalkeeper we've had, Cameron Belford was! However I'd discount him entirely as 5 games played isn't enough to judge anyone on. Alex Cisak takes the crown as 27 games is enough to be judged on and King Kenny takes a creditable 2nd place (more than creditable as he played behind some shocking teams).
The others are neither here nor there but Bavs isn't that far behind them and has played a hell of a lot more games. The team itself has kept 78 clean sheets in all competitions since joining the FL at an average of 20.6%. So Bavs has performed better than the team average and that's good enough for me.
