On Stanley On ? where does this chant come from?
Hello Everyone,
A mate of mine would like to know where or when the chant 'On Stanley On' came about, can anyone help out with this?
Many thanks,
Baskerville.

Re: On Stanley On ? where does this chant come from?
I first heard an old lady shout it in the stand when I was a teenager.
It probably goes back before that though

It came from a song from the 1950's (I think) called "On Stanley On". See

Re: On Stanley On ? where does this chant come from?
The actual quotation comes from Sir Walter Scott's "Marmion", dated 1808. The line goes:
"Charge, Chester, charge, on Stanley on!"
It was adopted as a sort of Stanley battle-cry in the 1950s and was then immortalised in the song, written for Stanley, the first line of which was
"On Stanley on, lads, on Stanley on!" and which has been quoted many times, both correctly and incorrectly on this messageboard. Somewhere in my loft I believe I have a taped copy of the song which was re-released to coincide with Stanley's great cup run in the early nineties which ended at Ewood Park against Crewe.
"Mary's Music" on (I think!) Abbey Street or the bottom of Whalley Road(prop. Mary Mortimer, wife of Joe from Mort's dance hall), did a roaring trade selling copies of it to sad but nostalgic old Peel Park-ites like myself.

Re: On Stanley On ? where does this chant come from?
Mary's Music was merely the retailer.
The producers of the tape/song in the early 90s were Red Dawn and the 'force' behind the project was Terry Slinger, ex-Stanley photographer

Re: On Stanley On ? where does this chant come from?
But has anyone got a copy of the original and who was it by? I seem to remember my dad having an old 78rpm but don't know what happened to it. (But thenagain that might just be my aging brain.) It was certainly played at home games in the early sixties (Probably by Ricky Kirby's granddad!)

Re: On Stanley On ? where does this chant come from?
The recorded version I have is credited as "The Stanley Choir & Red Dawn".
I was hoping to see Terry at the OSC meet tonight but he wasn`t there, but I`m sure he will be able to sort you out a 6 track CD featuring:-
Accrington Go ! - ASFC Norwegian supporters club
Stanley Centenary Song - Chris Lazenby
On Stanley On - as mentioned
Don`t Rush me - Red Dawn
Accrington Aria - Rochdale Brass Band
Centenary Instrumental
Like I say Terry is the man to see or ask about this.
I can only do you the Stanley`s Back E.P. for 3 quid.

Re: On Stanley On ? where does this chant come from?
This is my earlier thread detailing virtually all we knew at the time.
http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...ley-30081.html
Jon Anderson of Yes could remember singing the song at the old Stanley.
Someone at one of the games told me that the record was backed by a local choir.
I sing it and hum the tune regularly at work in Leeds. I work open plan. I am not sure what my work mates make of it.

Re: On Stanley On ? where does this chant come from?
As far as I can tell these are the words :-
Stanley`s the team that we all talk about,
Their name and fame are spreading far and wide.
They`re on the Lash (?)
They`re sportsmen through and through
Follow the gallant lads in red who will turn the tide.
On Stanley on lads on Stanley on
We'll cheer our heads off
When you get that ball into the net
So its on Stanley on lads
We'll fight until we've won
Be sure we'll never be downhearted
cos its ON Stanley On !
I`ve listened over and over and it still sounds like Lash to me

Re: On Stanley On ? where does this chant come from?
After hours of research I believe "On Stanley On" was written by a chappy called
Milton Holgate, he apparently was the conductor for the "Accrington Male Voice Choir"?. The tune, (and possibly the words) were written before the start of WW.2 .
Hope this helps
