Re: Portsmouh Emirates FA Cup 2nd rd Match Thread
Disappointed but no shame in losing at Portsmouth, we didn't really get going till towards end of first half but saying that the ref didn't help matters - another useless twonk & his replacement late on wasn't much better!
Not the most welcoming of places either, pathetic organisation at the ground with absolutely no provision of parking for away supporters coaches & a real jobsworth of a steward on duty who seemed to take pleasure in sending us round the houses to find a space for our bus, was one ground I really wanted to visit but came away wondering why.
At one point the home supporters were nearly all waving little lights around - thought for a moment we were at a Barry Manilow concert - very strange!

Re: Portsmouh Emirates FA Cup 2nd rd Match Thread
Professor Coleman's match summary is spot on. Extremely blustery wind, but that affected both teams, so no excuses there. Pompey won it in the first 21 minutes of the first half, when Stanley couldn't get out of their half. As AccyMad says, signs of hope for the Reds in the last quarter of an hour of the first half, but nothing much changed in the second half. Pompey harried and pressed deep, including Mr.Mooney, and rarely gave any Stanley player more than a second touch before a tackle, push or barge. The crowded out Messrs Windass and Crooks (who, if Rangers were doing a final scout, may be staying put) and when they got the ball their efforts just didn't quite come off. It all got a bit frantic and unnecessary towards the end, with even the generally useless ref having to go off for a sit down, and (here's a surprise), Mr. Bell having to be cooled down.
I'm sure Stanley will learn from this game as, much as it pains us all, the Snake and Liam got their game plan spot on.
Just hope they draw Eastleigh away in the next round.

Re: Portsmouh Emirates FA Cup 2nd rd Match Thread
From te coverage on BBC lancs, it sounded like Stanley simply didn't want to know. they turned up and that is the best they could say, Coley said the better team won. others say the better team didn't play. It would have been a great boost for us to win. or are we just sacrificing everything for the league, some people want us to qualify via the wembley rout for the money, but we may just lose a vital game on that route. I hope we get back on track quick.

Way i look at it, woulda been nice to have won, but simple fact is, its impossible to win all yer away matches n i'd rather lose this un than a league game.

If that's the quality of BBC Lancs' football knowledge, I'd switch stations if were you.
Pompey were fired up for it and a fairly weak ref allowed them to bustle Stanley out of it from the off. Pompey also have some very good players, and played much better than when we played them in September.
The Stanley team tried all they could to get a win. If they can 'not try to win' against a team as good as Pompey and keep it to a single goal, then they are indeed a special squad.

Re: Portsmouh Emirates FA Cup 2nd rd Match Thread
Agree with the above post, I don't have many positive things to say about Paul Cook but one good thing he's always done is his homework on the opposition & yesterday was no exception - they set up to stop us playing our passing game & that coupled with the conditions made it a really difficult game for our lads.
As I said before the ref didn't help matters either, their players going down like they'd been shot at every opportunity & he fell for it every time - how in the world their no. 10 stayed on the pitch is beyond me, he wasn't even cautioned for two or three off the ball incidents & when he was finally booked it was for kicking the ball away which apparently is a worse crime than having your fist in an opposition players face?

Re: Portsmouh Emirates FA Cup 2nd rd Match Thread
We travelled by rail ( enough said ) yesterday so our plans did not go to plan exactly. Thought Portsmouth ran rings round us for the first 30 mins . Second half was a different , we came out with all guns blazing and it shown . The ref spoiled the game to me with all the stop start , but when he got his own leg checked out and delayed things it spoilt it, it stopped the flow . As said earlier the opposition went down like ten pins and the ref fell for them all , giving free kicks. Eventually the ref was replaced but unfortunately it was too late for Stanley . Some one had to lose . We can now channel all our energy into the league . I must also add we found some Portsmouth fans who were more than helpful , they were on our train and asked us if we been there before , seeing we hadn't they escorted us to the ground and shown us our entrance , many thanks lads.

I listened on Radio Solent, thanks to deeayess n samf, and they are likely to be more biased towards Pompey, i would think,? certainly didn't get the impression the lads just turned up, did get impression Pompey deserved it on the day, also got impression the ref was very weak, I wouldn't trust Radio Lancs to make me a brew, if thats the impression they gave you chrisr

Re: Portsmouh Emirates FA Cup 2nd rd Match Thread
Pompey did to us what we did to them in the league game earlier, didn't give us a second on the ball when we tried to play it about on the ground, so it kept going up in the air and what happened next was up to the wind .....
Their goal was a great bit of right wing play followed by a clinical finish from inside left - if the two had been linked by the winger chipping the ball over the players in the box instead of it somehow bobbling through everybody, it would have been a truly great goal - as it was, it was a bit on the jammy side.
After all that's been said about Josh W this season, I thought he was peripheral at best yesterday. Kee and Crooks, McConville and Mingoia all more visible but not quite putting it together. And for me, Wright was the star of a usually composed but occasionally shaky defence, and probably our m-o-m.
When Josh was subbed off, I was certain we'd get a penalty which would then have gone over the roof of the Fratton End stand .....
Hey ho, let's concentrate on the league - On Stanley On!

Re: Portsmouh Emirates FA Cup 2nd rd Match Thread
I wasn't there but I wonder if we missed the 'quietly controlling influence' of Seamus Coneely who was unable to play. For me he has been the main reason for our much improved midfield this season. Yes, Windass and Crooks have been the 'shining lights' but i reckon that Seamus provides the 'voltage' for them to shine!

I wondered the same, but our manager reckoned it would have made no difference, and hes got qualifications,

Re: Portsmouh Emirates FA Cup 2nd rd Match Thread
I was following the match on the 'Fishy' site live feed and also on the BBC Sport live feed and I couldn't believe that we did not have a single shot 'on target' until Terry Gornell's header in added on time!
Heigh ho!.......
Here's to the next match at home against Wycombe next Saturday and the return to full fitness of both Seamus and Deano, a return to our earlier league form and three more points in our quest for a high place in the league!
Although I cannot be there next Saturday due to other commitments [COLOR="Red"] I will be kicking every ball with the players and the supporters!
