My personal favourite was going to Halifax in our second conference season. I went as a steward as we had to steward our own fans coz Fax didn't have enough to cover the away end!!!

As it turns out they didn't have enough to cover their home end either and I got draughted down in front of all Fax fans behind the goal. After about 20 mins Jaggers scored with an absolute peach of a volley, it was all I could do not to levitate!!!!

According to my mate whos a Fax fan and was stood in the home end, when we scored I planted my hands as far down in my pockets as possible and rocked forward onto my tiptoes, whilst all the time looking at the floor to hide the huge grin on my face!!! After about 10 seconds I remembered I had ASFC Steward written on the front and back of my hi-viz jacket!!! I've never been so aware of a 1000+ people staring at me in my life!!!!

I'll never forget that!!!

I remember going with Sheffield United fans on the away end for a league game at Oxford United.

United fans spent the game taunting "Specky eyed Oxford fans" - in fact most of them were from Cowley car works!!!

As Foley scored the second Oxford goal I remember the words "We've had it naaagh" gleefully coming out of my mouth. Those around me solemnly agreed. That was the start of the rot that saw Sheffield United in League 4 soon after.

By that time Sheffield Wednesday were basking in what is now the Championship but when the news came through that Notts County had beaten them 2-1 at Hillsborough I let out a loud involuntary groan and had to run the gauntlet of some hostile stares as I beat a hasty retreat from the terrace.

In 1984 I sat with Liverpool fans in the League Cup Quarter Final tie at Hillsborough and in the 1986 FA Cup Semi Final I sat with Everton Fans lauding their offside goal in the Trinity Road Stand through 120 minutes of Football at Villa.

I also remember being on the Stretford End with my United supporting mates as Sheffield Wednesday beat them 2-1. Under Wilkinson Wednesday epitomised the bludgeon and rapier approach unlike United's more cultured football and as the second goal went in I can remember my mates shouting "Suppose your satisfied now" as I prayed for the ground to open up.

For some reason I was stood on the "Car Wash Terrace", about level with where Craney let fly, for his cracker at Morecambe Bay. I managed to restrain myself to a few claps, in the style of a begrudingly fair follower of football.

In fact, it was more difficult when Rocky's header flew in, big grin spreading across my face.

Folloowing the demise of Stanley's Lancs Comb side in the mid 60s I started supporting MUFC (no apologies, it was the Best / Law / Charlton team and anyway I could use the same scarf). My mate and I usually went in the Stretford End but against Liverpool it sold out - we had to get in to get the token out of the programme to have a chance of European Cup tickets, and the only option was in the Scoreboard End with the Koppites. United scored first, at the Scoreboard End, and we were 3 feet in the air with arms outstretched before we thought "Oh ****, bad move".

We were only about 16 and both little, which probably saved us, and we only got bantered, even though (I think) United won. Couple of years later when things were generally nastier it might have been very different .

It's when you get asked for the time walking through Stanley Park that you know the banter is going to be more physical

Brings back a lot of memories, that; my dad warned me against giving the time, back in the early sixties (both of us scousers).

remonds me of a funny,many years ago, me n a few mates went on the stretford end to support rovers (pat crerands days) got some real stick off the utd fans then about 15 mins into the game,was carried off on a stretcher by St,Johns Ambulance, wasn,t the stretford end thugs though,was a 30yd shot from Crerand that sparked me. made the manchester evening news i was told lol

Once went with my dad to Anfield in the late fifties or early sixties supporting the Rovers, and through sheer ignorance found ourselves in the middle of the swaying Kop. I can't remember the score but I know we won with the brilliant Andy McEvoy scoring right in front of our noses - believe me it was not difficult to keep silent with all the scousers in an ugly mood!

Once on a packed Kop in sixties and a few Yanks arrived at about 10 to 3, seeing the empty space behind a crush barrier, they stood there, very pleased with themselves. Nobody said a word.

First attack, they realised why no-one stood behind a barrier.

I'd love to make the claim (and who could disprove it ? - I could even say I was one of the kids in the Garth Dawson picture) but no, I don't think so. My support peaked in the LC2 championship winning season (bandwagon jumper then as now )
