Smith and Flitcroft sign for Barrow!

...............for another months loan.

From our local rag:

TURNY: EVERYONE HAS THEIR PRICE
Published on 03/09/2004

</SPAN>LEE Turnbull last night expressed his wish to sign Jonathan Smith and Steve Flitcroft after the pair agreed to extend their loan deals.

The Bluebirds boss this week reached an agreement with the Accrington Stanley duo that will keep them at Holker Street until the end of September.

And Turnbull would love to make them Barrow players permanently — despite the two being on full-time contracts at the Nationwide Conference club.

Neither have featured in Stanley manager John Coleman’s plans this season, though Turnbull is unsure if he’d let them leave The Interlink Express Stadium.

But Turnbull, who takes his team to Stalybridge Celtic tomorrow (kick-off 3pm), said: “Everyone has a price, it doesn’t matter who you are, as we’ve seen with Wayne Rooney!

“I wouldn’t have brought them to the club if I wasn’t (interested in them). They are two who I rate quite highly.

“I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Steve Flitcroft, but I think Jonathan Smith has been excellent for us.”

Smith, pictured below, has been AFC’s top defender in their opening five Nationwide North games.

Now Turnbull is dreaming at the possibility of pairing the towering centre-back with injured captain Mark Salmon.

He added: “You have to look at that long- term and think it would be an excellent pairing, but Samo is still some way off and we’ll have a better idea in a month how close he is to full fitness.”
