Re: Stanley Rivals
I think Plum started the mutual hatred about 10 years ago.
As usual we were playing them on a tuesday night when not as many Stanley could make it. There were about 20 of us behind the covered goal having song like we do, when the Barrow inbreds came to stand behind us and try to outshout us. For about twenty minutes this was as it should be - banter between rival fans. Then matters took a twist and they became more and more personal with pretty much every individual one of us. Even Loweiy kept his instant witicisms to himself. Then, in a moment of inspired humour, one of the Cul-de-Sac living troglodytes asked if we still drank milk. Such belly laughs I have never heard the like of before from the Cumbrian mis-fits until Plum replied "do you still build submarines?" This was about 72 hours after Granada news had reported the closure of yet another dockyard in the rusty, decaying backwater village near Ulverston.
The silence was deafening until chaos resumed. At the end of that game the stewards held us back a while until the car park was cleared. Incidentally they had forgotten about us and were fighting amongst themselves over sacking the manager or something.
The following year half a dozen of us were followed down an unlit back street and had stones and bottles thrown at us by a mob of locals and then a few years later was the game where we were forced to stand on the rain sodden terraces for more than an hour because they wouldn't let us into the stands. That was also the game where Stoned Nick was punched in the clubhouse at half-time and as we were escorted back onto the terrace we had abuse hurled at us that it was numpties like us that got clubhouses closed at half-time! W@nkers.
Barrow, we sh!t you.
