Wink Re: Stanley ? weres it originate?

I'm still around KSH, but not being able to go the FES, I don't have much to offer on recent issues, although I'll volounteer this one: For the manager not to speak to the local paper is unprofessional, no matter how unprofessional he thinks they've been. (Sorry wrong thread).
But I'm sure he'll find a new forward soon. He seems to do that when the team concedes too many.

I don't think Stanley merged with anyone. Accrington FC just ceased to be, and Stanley took over as the premier club in town. They were already Accrington Stanley by then. The clubs even shared Moorhead for a season, but never played each other.

Re: Stanley ? weres it originate?

Along time ago I was having a quite pint in the "Fartin Donkey" (now called the Woodnook ) when an old man told me the story of Accrington Stanley.. he said the club was named after a one legged window cleaner called Stanley Arkwright who played as a striker for Peel Park..(good in the air apparently)
Stanley Arkwright retired in the late 1800's and was Landlord of the "Hop 'n' Bucket" pub (renamed the Queens) ...amazing but true!

And just to tidy up the loose ends of the history lesson,

The Stanley Arm's shouldn't be confused with the working men's club that used to be on Stanley St - its original name was The Dyers & Bleachers WMC (a great reminder of the cotton mills which surrounded these streets)

In fact the Stanley Arms was slightly further up Stanley St, just across the corner from the WMC across Washington St - it is now the building used by the Accrington Detachment of the Army Cadet Force

The Dyers & Finishers WMC ceased trading and that building is now "The Stanley Street Social Club, and is a private members club

Ironically, The Stanley is the current base of Accrington Clarets.
