Re: Stanley ? weres it originate?
long time ago, there was Accrington FC, one of the founders of the Football League, and Stanley Villa at Accrington. it was called Stanley Villa cause they were based at Stanley Arms on Stanley Street.
then Stanley Villa got the name of the city with the end of Accrington FC, forming the first Accrington Stanley
i think thats it, i read that on the official website some time ago

Why Stanley
The original town team, Accrington FC were amongst the twelve founder members of the Football League in 1888, before resigning from the league after just five years. An existing team already existed at that time called Stanley Villa, named as such because they were based at the Stanley Arms on Stanley Street in the town. With the demise of Accrington FC, Stanley Villa took the town name to become Accrington Stanley, and existed in the lower divisions of the Football League until 1962, when the club famously resigned from the League midway through the season due to financial difficulties. Their last game was played on 2nd March, 1962. The club reformed again in 1968, and has progressed through the local county leagues to the Football Conference, and after three seasons in the Nationwide Conference made a historic return to the Football League.

Re: Stanley ? weres it originate?
And the Stanley Arms is so-called as it's in Stanley Street (as in Bold Street WMC etc) so in a round about way they are named after the street.
I seem to recall having read somewhere that most of the players lived in Stanley Street too, but maybe that's an urban myth.

Re: Stanley ? weres it originate?
Diego's got it right, Mr C. The club didn't play at Peel Park until 1919.
