Re: The early Swindon match thread ............
Good post revived red.you nail a lot of good points.Couple of general questions, why are we playing 4-4-2 as its years since we did ?, is it to accommodate wide players?.
If you want to build a solid defensive base.you don't open the game up,and 4-4-2 does that, indeed not many successful teams play that way,and since we have put our extra man up front and wingers staying wide, your asking for trouble, and we're not even creating much as a result.
Coley has made Rochdale a hard team to beat now,and it's not by playing two up top.
I believe cooky is a better coach IMHO,so it's a mystery why he's changed thinks so quickly.
It maybe because we have points on the board, therefore he can experiment, that's the only reason I can think of.

I suspect that things probably will be ok in the end but I do think that the manager has tried to change too much too quickly. Martin O'Neill changed virtually nothing when he arrived at Sunderland - but he has been able to get the best out of individual players by making them believe in their own ability and what they are doing. On the other hand, Steve Kean changed tactics at Ewood Park to make the football more attractive. It makes you think. Or it should do.
We all keep the faith, we all support the team. Maybe it's just that some of us are more worried than others.

Just the simple fact we have no proven goalscorer, a bad run was virtually certain to me, in fact it was starting before even leam took the helm, The Gills game, even though we won it n scored 4, Thats why i can agree wi shaker, when he said the system needed to change, Its similar to when we played one striker well before that, Most people i know think that was well sussed n coley eventually changed tactic, I just cannot grasp why some are worried, the wheels seem to have come off lately wi Sunderland,?as fer football19s solid defensive base, all well n good n i can agree, But the players we lost recently through leaving n injury, don't help that cause one little bit? So if cooky feels a change of tactics, that will do fer me, yeh gotta have faith in the new man,or things may go tits up big time. Keep The Faith.

Cashy your make a good point,if you look back on the forum when Crewe beat us at home,I said teams had worked out how to get among our 4-2-3-1 system and said we should go 4-3-3,coley did not long after and we went on a great run(never did get paid for that advice lol !,)

Re: The early Swindon match thread ............
I think RR's post (95) was a good summary of the game I saw.
First half we were awful and were lucky to go in only two down (although Swindon's second was suspiciously like offside). Their wingers gave us a roasting and at times three of them were fighting with each other to get on the end of the crosses. It wasn't rocket science - if the sun's low and the goalie doesn't wear a cap, get the crosses in. I didn't think having McIntyre in front of Liddle worked.
Second half we showed much more promise. Murphy was very sound as centre back and, despite his modest stature, so was Liddle. Keeping a clean sheet for the second half was not solely down to saves from the new keeper, although he did excel himself in that department. The new player I thought showed most potential was Devitt; although he had to drop back to get hold of the ball, he looked up and made some good attacking passes. Very unlucky to see Hughes come on at half time only to go off injured after a couple of minutes. Smith's entrance and performance revealed how ineffective Lindfield was throughout the 90 minutes;just a pity Guthrie couldn't have also got on to replace Lindfield.
For spells Stanley showed some real promise in all but one aspect of the game; it's just unfortunate that it's scoring goals that gets the points. But, after 0-4 at home against the bottom of the league, 2-0 away to the top of the league must be some kind of improvement.
The Chef is going to need more time to get the team playing how he wants them but I fear that it may result in more wholsesale changes at half time and, with the fixtures that are left, missing out on another play-off push. I hope not. But there were grounds for optimism in that second half performance.
Fidem servare.

Re: The early Swindon match thread ............
Thing is pre-season we would all have been happy to survive, Season got going n we played some great football n the dream was alive, But was only going to stay alive if we kept that squad together, Player loss n injury ballsed that up, Fact we have a tiny squad of quality, so i can accept the dream was always likely a non-starter, I'm encouraged by reports of our second half at swindon, cos i think they will get automatic promotion, I agree wi Exile,on the grounds for optimism, even if Malcolm The Mole thinks i'm n ostrich.
