The state of the game

Oliver Holt, Chief sports writer at The Mirror, and one of the few Journalists to recognise lower league football, has written another piece on his club, Stockport County. He has written many times about his club and the state of the game in general.

Don't walk on by as Stockport die. Your club could be next..

It is a good read and so relevant to many clubs including Stanley.

Re: The state of the game

Makes for difficult reading, I remember when I lived in Stockport going to Edgley Park to watch Danny Bergara's Men play and traveling to wembley (twice in the same season!) to watch them lose!

Lets hope that someone can put a decent package together and stop the rot.

Ditto to Mr T's and Accymads comments.................there but for the grace indeed.

Cheers, Mick. A very evocative piece of writing and some very astute observations, especially about the greedy selfishness of the premier league. The County fans up the pub are so depressed at the moment they won't even join in the banter anymore.

As Mr T says, thanks you Ilyas and Peter!

Anybody who doesn't eat a prawn butty at football matches has known for years whats happening. The problem is how do you stop it happening, and more to the point who can stop it happening ?

Re: The state of the game

A vindication of Today's modern day game unfortunately

I fear the worst for a lot of teams over the coming Summer, the mass appeal of the PL and it's structure even means within the PL there is effectively four mini leagues in one

For the Lower League Clubs like ourselves it is a daily grind just to make ends meet, I am not quite sure what the answer is for football in general, whether that is a more equal share of the wealth, more fan assisted Clubs in the form of Trust's & cooperatives.

But one thing is for sure the game in general must bring it's house in order with the PL & Football League putting both their might together and being radical with the game from the very Top to the Very Bottom and looking out for the interest's of all 92 League Clubs and even beyond that to ensure the game survives and flourishes for future generations and not just the elite few here & now.

It is a debate that will rumble on but I think as of yet we have not even seen the tip of the iceberg.

The problem with that is that the reduced money will probaly be taken off what little bit the smaller clubs get now
