Too true, this is why we watch Stanley.... Never be world beaters, but at least they play with honesty & passion,& provide enjoyment for their fans.
I stopped being interested in our national team about the same time that Sky started to call the tune, & players were suddenly millionaires.

Again? They weren't world beaters in '66, they raised their game a bit given home advantage and won against the odds. Remember how everybody laughed at Ramsey when he said we could win it then? Ever since, for some reason we've seemed to expect to do it again, against even bigger odds.

Not that I don't agree the system is screwed - if the best English players can't get regular games for their clubs on Saturday, how can we expect them to compete at world level?

And Hodgson certainly didn't leave a bunch of world beaters behind who would have made the difference. A couple of lucky bounces might have ....

Re: World Cup

We all saw in the build up to the World Cup, that in the friendlies against West Germany, and in particular Chile, that the potential squad were nowhere near good enough to compete with any success in Brazil !...which has sadly been proven to be true.
Can I suggest that the FA did choose the wrong Manager for this task ?....To my eyes the shortcomings and weaknesses so clearly on view against Uruguay were just as apparent in the squad long before Roy Hodgson took over, and little or no progress has been made under his direction. The FA, in the shape of that well-known soccer guru Greg Dyke, suggested yesterday that not only was Woy the man to lead us into the next European Championships...
BUT that England would win the same !....odd thing to say ??.
A potential hat trick of wins for Costa Rica could well change the apparent 'We love Roy' attitudes of the faceless ones at the FA ....if so, maybe Davo or one or more of his fans might be able to suggest who should be the next England Manager !.....Alfred.E. says Gary Neville !.
But he knows less than Greg Dyke !..
ANY SUGGESTIONS ??.

Re: World Cup

Personally i would leave well alone,I accept the fact we have NO world class players at the moment, what i have seen is some young lads wi potential, if that will be fullfilled remains to to be seen, nobody could make us into world beaters at this point, its the owd saying "Yeh can't polish a turd" Far as i'm concerned the guy had the balls to ship the owd has beens, never won sod all out n try youth.

Re: World Cup

Thinking back, the popular choice before Hodgson was appointed was Rednapp, The guy couldn't get automatic promotion wi QPR after spending millions!! so why change.?

Re: World Cup

My carefully thought out lengthy just post lost in the ether. Sufficient to say dire - the worst performance of the 3. R.I.P. England.

Re: World Cup

How come, then, the England players were unable to replicate their Prem skills against a team from clubs unknown on the world stage, who had them in their pockets while playing at half pace.. Surely they shouldn't have been better at that than the Prem League superstar defenders?
Five live's commentators told it as it was, crap, unlike Adrian Child's ITV panellists who desperately tried to find some positives from the shambles, as did Roy.

Re: World Cup

I didn't, and won't watch England's latest game but listened to it on 5Live too. And for once I heard an 'expert summariser' (Mills, I believe) say what, to me has been one of England's problems for many years. With one or two exceptions, few players seem to want the ball. When an England player has the ball he's lucky to have one option for a pass. Usually sideways or backwards. At their best, teams like Spain and Germany always seem to have a minimum of two players looking to receive the ball, sometimes three. I don't know whether it's fear of being seen to fail, or the inner knowledge that, despite all the money and media-hype, they are just not that good, but too many players in a white shirt don't seem willing to help out team mates. You occasionally see it in League 2 but you don't expect to see the nation's 'best' players passing the ball to their nearest team member, and then stop running into space to be available for a return.
We have a media that is world class in creating hype, and raising expectations beyond what is reasonable from the evidence before our eyes, but a second or even third rate team. Maybe it's the former that's the real problem.

Re: World Cup

I take little notice of the hype n bull, imho trying out young uns wi potential was the only way to go, oer long time pros that have never looked like winning sod all fer england, ok yeh need to play a couple, to encourage the young uns, we were never gonna get near winning this world cup n all but a cretin would know that,

This squad couldn't hold a candle even to our post 1966, much derided teams featuring such heroes as Moore, Banks, Gazza, Linaker, Shearer, and many others.
Italy's manager has resigned. I'm beginning to think Roy should do the same.

Re: World Cup

Well I thoroughly enjoyed our last game , I thought Lampard involved the younger ones as much as possible . These lads are our hope for the future . We were the better team. Costa Rica were the favourites to win the game and we kept them at bay, we may not have won , but we didn't lose. I thought the game went downhill when Mickey oops, I mean Wayne Rooney came on.
