Youth Game

Hi all,

Went to the youth game last night and witnessed such a great sight with Stanley grabbing a deserved win against a famous west ham youth team! What a great night ........until, I was walking out of the entrance of the main stand. What I saw and witnessed in that last few minutes was absolutely disgusting as a club! All night there had been a group of lads (around 15-19) making an absolute racket in the main stand supporting the reds on and actually making a cracking atmosphere out of the game! As the game went on the two stewards who were the only ones there were obviously getting very tetchy and probably a case of bordem and kept making excuses of going up to them in extra time to cause a situation not needed i.e telling them to stop waving a flag and to stop swearing in songs. However as said , when walking out a steward had grabbed one of the lads and had pulled him into one of of the ticketing stalls, cornered him and was blocking him from getting out ! He was also holding a piece of seating that a ball had smashed the whole crowd saw and was trying to use this against him. Anyway, this steward was adamant he could block this young fella in the ticket stall and wasn't allowed out. Next there was a crowd around him with people telling him he couldn't do that and to let him out. With people doing this next came the atrocious language with many words coming out of his mouth including several occurrences of '**** off, go away' and then came the threat of violence towards people but mainly it was the language which was appalling! After many minutes of trying to negotiate with him and many stewards he finally moved out the way so this lad could finally be let out!

I'm sick and tired of these stewards and very much told them and him (the main culprit) that and also told them and other people how these group of 15 lads won't be here on Saturday because of people like him and why this club is on the downhill because of him! Why would these lads pay money to be treated like that again! The steward had no right to hold him against his will in a ticketing stall and not to let him out! No right at all! But also the main anger of people witnessing this was his language! We're paying customers and your telling us to f'off etc and using violent threats!

I was unsure wether to post this as yes it's every negative but I'm sick and tired of these kind of people at our club bringing it down! I didn't know where to complain and a threat of not going to home games would also not make any difference either as I'm just a number and this will still carry on! I think the whole security situation needs to be looked at Stanley as their stewarding and also there customer service skills are appalling!! The funny thing is many clubs come to our ground , take the mick and there no where to be seen! It's a sad state of affairs! These are the main reasons us ultras don't bring the colour now to the Clayton end and also why many fans , friends and family don't return and don't make the effort to visit the crown ground!

By the way , the man in question is the guy dressed in jeans and casual wear but with that high viz on that apparently makes you a copper and power mad! I hope he gets a good grilling and also sent on a course for some stewarding practises!

Re: Youth Game

If thats the case n can be substantiated by witness accounts, the as far as i'm concerned "Dismissal" not a course is the answer, in any works that i'm aware of that is conduct that warrants it.

Re: Youth Game

Totally agree - the steward as reported was out of order and not fit for purpose, a guarantee of falling gates. Get rid.

To many busy body stewards at the crown,
As Mr.Whalley said ' I wouldn't pay them with washers'.

Not a big believer in sackings but send him on a stewarding training course and an apology to the lad involved!

Re: Youth Game

Seems a very one sided report. When I saw the lad he was in one of the turnstile areas being spoken to, didn't seemto be an issue then and he certainly didn't seem to be agitiated.

Could that not be the main reason it all got out of hand ? I'm not defending anything the steward may or may not have said, but lets get both sides

Your certainly giving your opinion and you wasn't there'! The people all started to crowd round as soon as they saw what was happening because of what language is being said!
I tell you what Dave, go to the club , get the CCTV , watch it , ask the 30 odd witnesses what happened and they will have the exact same story ! Why would i make this story up ? To be honest your post is quite insulting to me! I'm not asking for 'his side' I'm clearly pointing out what this steward did and said and your clearly doubting what I've said! Il also if you want round 10 people up in the pub on Saturday , come meet you and then one by one they can tell you their story about it if you want me proving it?

Glad to see your on the side of the wrong! Hopefully something will happen to you and il be the first to back sides with the wrong and question what you saw!

Re: Youth Game

I wasn't there either, but let's not take insult at what Lancsdave said:
"I'm not defending anything the steward may or may not have said, but lets get both sides"
I think we're all aware of how a hot-head steward or a humourless copper can ruin things for fans or a club, but what Lancsdave wrote is, or ought to be, simply the basis for what passes for justice in this country.

If it happened as described then the lad in question and witnesses should at least contact the club and make an official complaint about the steward's behaviour, so both sides can be taken into account.

I think you've taken that out of all proportion. As I said I saw him being spoken to and at that point there didn't appear to be an issue at that particular point in time. At no point have I said it didn't happen, you reported an incident which happened after and I asked why it had happened.

In every ground there are usually good stewards and bad, I reported one myself a few years at Burnley for his attitude when he tried to have me ejected because I asked him to move out of my view.

Re: Youth Game

Don't even known the lad yet I'm giving what I witnessed! No need for the '2 sides of the story'. Anyway , I'm not getting involved with anymore. Just thought id put what I saw and heard on my way out!

Re: Youth Game

I did go to the match on Tues night , I did not see what you witnessed at all , but I did leave straight away and I did see Lancs Dave , so he was there. What is described as a few teens making a good atmosphere is rather exaggerated , they were shouting absolute foul language , it was disgusting so much that the stewards did receive a complaint . They should have been asked to leave shortly after kick off. You also fail to mention that the one with the flag ( he got it about ten mins from end ) actually went on the pitch with it when Stanley scored the winning goal. So tell the whole story please.

Re: Youth Game

What has that got to do with the incident AFTER the game! The stewards had 20 minutes to sort them out during the game and did by moving them! You can't have excuses for the language , threats and behaviour of a steward and his physicopathic ways of shoving the harmless 15 year old into a ticketing booth and holding him against his will!

Anyway , I don't know why your giving me flack ! Wasn't me doing it! Suppose it's what I get for sticking up for the lad! Just saying what I saw and hoping something's done! And about the language it's a football ground and game! Whole of the Clayton end would of been banned by now...

And thereby lies what could be a problem with attendances at the Crown! Some of the songs and language that I have heard is disgusting! Yes it is part of the game, you hear it enough on Match of the Day/Football League show and live football matches. Doesn't make it right though. Maybe, people are sick of the language and won't bring kids [although to be fair, most hear a lot worse in the playgrounds at school] and older generation don't want to hear it. Personally, it won't stop me, but doesn't mean I have to like it.

To DAV007 please do not tar all stewards with the same brush. Yes there is often the one bad apple in the barrel, having done the job, the abuse you get for doing a job and upholding football league rules is not fun. Eric Whalley was insulting when he made that speech on TV, and at the time, the then stewards nearly went on strike. No stewards = no football at the Crown, you would do well to remember this. They are essential. And if as has been stated by others, these youths were swearing in main [family] stand, then they deserved to be ejected or at least moved, however, I suspect the main stand was the only one open. Also the issue of one running on the pitch after Stanley scored should be an automatic ban from the ground, there are enough signs on the pitch side wall stating entering the field of play will result in prosecution or words to that effect
