A losing battle..

I feel like I am fighting several losing battles at the moment. So much for having a break from work. I have been into work this morning to give a seminar type thingy, for want of a better phrase.. I have been involved for the last couple of years in infection control for our unit and have had to teach on some study days. I feel like all I do these days is continually harp on at staff, visitors, patients and anyone else who will listen about hand hygiene, proper waste disposal and the physical, emotional and fiscal cost of health care acquired infections. The thing that I have found during audits and by just being plain nosy is that our students are no longer taught effective handwashing during theoretical study days.... If they have been, none of them can remember it.:( I remember that it was drummed into us from day 1 during classroom sessions as a student nurse. I feel sometimes like I am banging my head against a brick wall with some of em.. How on Earth can any of us teach these lasses good practices if they are not being continually reinforced at Uni????

Another losing battle is with my Xmas shopping. I have no idea what anyone wants so have had to stab a few guesses. I can just imagine the looks of abject disappointment on a few faces this year when they open my offerings.:o The thing is that I find some people (and by that I mean men), difficult to buy for. Most of the fellas in my family tend to sort themselves out with stuff. My dad is quite easy, he has asked for socks for about the 10th year running. I reckon that men ask for socks because at least they will get a pressie that they can use. With the money that they save on having to buy socks they could get themselves something decent. I have been hunting for a present for Sparks and I have found something for him. I hope he likes it but I am not counting my chickens. The only good thing about the Xmas shopping is that everything that I have got so far is wrapped. Instead of bunging it all in the bedroom and having a giant, much hated wrapping marathon, I have wrapped it as I have got it.

I am also fighting a losing battle with myself at the moment. The problem is that I hate the winter. For the last couple of weeks since the clocks went back, I have felt totally miserable and cannot seem to motivate myself to do anything. I have tried to get more light, I have been out and about during the day, went out for some fresh air last friday up Pendle Hill, tried to have a few early nights, eaten less junk but nothing seems to be working. I know that S.A.D. is a common disorder but does anybody else out there have a permanent headache, complete inability to remember, well, anything really and feel close to tears all of the time... Maybe it's my age, or I need my eyes testing or something.

The only thing that has brought a hint of a smile today was an unsigned karma comment accusing me of being heartless. I had to smile a bit at it purely because the person who has done it obviously knows so little about me and the circumstances of my post. It's a shame that I can't share it on here but had to smile at the human nature of jumping to conclusions. Let's face it, we all jump to conclusions sometimes.

In order to try and cheer myself up a bit I am off to see my new nephew. I have to go and hunt for the camera now as I've realised that I haven't taken any photos of him yet. The only thing is....... I can't remember when I last had the camera, where I've put it or where it's even likely to be.
