Well, the rewiring's done, at least the largest part of the house which doesn't include the kitchen; see previous entry. Gary came on his own yesterday, as Luke was at college for the day, and finished everything off. I now have a spanking new fuse-board that looks like something out of the Starship Enterprise and equally as baffling. It's almost a shame to hide it away in the cupboard under the stairs.

As I'm down on a wall-light (alcove = built-in wardrobe above = unable to "get at") I went to IKEA today and bought a floor lamp. It's very slim and smart, brass with an "uplighter" shade and a dimmer switch, and its height adjusts from 4' to 6'. IKEA sells a lot of stuff I wouldn't want to buy but they do have some nice things and, lucky for me, this is one. As usual I had to go on a trek through the store to get to the lighting department, AND I'd cheated by starting at the "wrong" end. No way was I going round in circles on the upper floor, through chairs, beds, tables, desks etc. and getting desparate because I can't find the way out. I just fought my way past hordes of people coming the other way with loaded trolleys and those big yellow sacks on their backs. Anyway, my lamp has a decent name, it's called "Ardala". Some of the names of IKEA's goods are enough to put one off buying. We once saw a rug, there, called "Krappi" - and it WAS.

Laura is keen to get her new carpet fitted so she can have the top half of her bunk beds back in place. We had to take the top bunk off to make her very small room more "manageable". Grandson Peter, who is 19 and 6'3 tall and weighs about 10 st., came last Sunday to help us shift furniture and remove the old carpet. Fortunately he is much stronger than he looks and, after a pantomime worthy of Laurel and Hardy, we got the heavy, solid pine top bunk downstairs into the hall en route for the garage. Unfortunately it wouldn't go through the front porch doors, no matter how much I swore at it, so we had to dismantle it after all. I built the thing in the first place so, in theory, I should be able to rebuild it. Now, where the hell are the instructions?
