So I was across the road and in my house in a couple of minutes.
Faced with a very defensive other half.
I think he expected me to go off like a rocket...but I didn't.
I just asked quite calmly, what had happened.
He really had no idea how the minx had got out.
He had not missed her until he received the call that she was at the vets.
He asked the girl if she was sure it was Ruby.
'Well, the scanner says it is' said the girl.
'Oh bloody hell...I am in so much doo-doo when my wife finds out'
He said he gave a cursory look around the house...and shouted 'dreamies'....this brings both kitties from wherever they are hiding....they love those things, but get them rarely.
Rufus was there meowing for his treats, but of course no Ruby.
Himself panicked and went across to son in law and asked him to take him down to the vets on Eastgate.
All the way down town he was gabbling away in a demented fashion.
It was all about him not knowing how she had got out....that he had not had the door opened very much....he said he had not seen her get out....it was all academic really...and quite pointless.
When he got to the vets they called him in.
It looked like Ruby had received a glancing blow from a car....she had lost the claws from her front paws, she had a broken upper fang and she had a superficial cut on her chin and lip.
She was very dirty and dishevelled but other than that nothing major.
She was a bit quiet and looked very shame faced, guilty, chastened and in the dog house(not a great place when you are a cat)....she had found(like many young human adults) that the big outside world can be a dangerous and unfriendly place.
That often, these adventures that are so wanted, do not live up to expectations.
Whoever took her to the vets did not leave their contact details.
(I am really sorry about that. I would have loved to have thanked them personally for their kindness because it means so much to me to have her back)
Himself was sold a transport box to bring her home in.
The receptionist said he was visibly upset and needed a bit of calming down.
He was worried about Ruby, but was more worried about having to tell me.
I honestly did not feel it was worth going mad at him...I think, that he had punished himself enough.
It would not have achieved anything, and I was just very grateful that Ruby was not seriously injured, or worse...cat jam in the road.
She has stayed away from the doors since she came home...lurking in the bathroom, on the top of the stairs and lying by the side of the bed.
I am hoping that she will have learned her lesson.
That it has cured her wanderlust.
I would have been so upset if the person who picked her up had taken her home and I had had to spend hours or days wondering where she was.
So if it was you who did the good turn...or you know who it was...then please accept my heartfelt thanks.
