I hope you soaked them in a decent Brandy, that always brings out the flavour, (of the Brandy).

Best thing, google for it there are allsorts of recipes even just a plain bung them in the pan and leave them to burn sort of thing.
:p

Good heavens magpie ain't heard of black peas for years, the last time I had them was at the Castle on Whalley Road in the early 80s on a pool night

I have never cooked black peas but I make my own mushy peas - I think they will be the same - 20 - 30 mins simmer

the stall/van outside the market hall in accy sells them

my mate steams hers in a pressure cooker

Used to get mine from that health shop that shut down on union street.
When cooked theres nowt better than putting plenty of salt and vinegar on em....yummy

Well I soaked them over night.... and cooked them on a low heat for an hour:
Result: Very very good.... lots of vinegar and a splash of mint sauce: very filling and a good cheap and low calorie and low in fat tea:

The advantage of living alone - you can fart in bed without the need to apologize :D
I suggest opening a window before lighting a cigarette tonight

Are black peas the things that taste like lamp oil until you put vinegar on them? Do I remember correctly that they were popular on bonfire nite; or is my memory going?

they taste like brown rice.... yes bonfire night and of course at the fair ground.....
and Preston Market:

D'you know, Lancs-born-and-bred black pudding and tripe lover as I am, I don't think I've ever had black peas. Of course, after reading this thread, I desperately want to try them. I haven't noticed them on sale in the supermarkets round here. Are they sold dried in packets - or what?

for some reason I seem to remember they were obtained from the local pet shop  ;)

I got mine in the market hall in Accrington.... the one that used to be the Health Stall :
I think you can also get them at Pet shops:

Yep, they are sold dried in bags as black peas or pigeon peas, think you can still get them in the market hall here, or possibly Holland and Barretts?
Deffo a Bonfirenight staple! Loads of vinegar, I usually soak them overnight and then bring to boil following day before reheating on return from Bonfire!
