Hi All
Does any one know if there were any lodging houses in Oswaldtwistle fro 1860 onwards. I do, now of two that were in Accrington around the 1910/30's, Harry Duffs Good Beds down Bull Bridge, and the New Model Lodging House in Pit St Acc.

Also where were the Toilets besides Dutton St, and next to the Railway arch in Blackburn Rd.
Retlaw.

the toilets were directly past the bridge, coming towards church on the left, just before the little row with Ciros cafe in the middle, dutton street bogs were bottom end just opposite woolworths side window in centre of street, they were underground bogs.;):)

We needed to know where all the bogs where in those days cashy, it was hard work walking home with crossed legs:D

Just been doing some family tree researching, and through the 1881 census (which is about the only one you can get free..) came across a lodging house in Oswaldtwistle, 20, Mill Lane. Had 27 residents at the time of record.

Recently Park 381 gave us a link to a conservation doc about Church.
There was an extensive history section and in it there was mention of a lodging house opposite Hargreaves Warehouse on Blackburn Rd

think the thought behind em was = women will not pee in the street, oh how times change.:D

Will take that as a back handed compliment or did you mean we will pee in the street now ... :D

Tell you what you never see now .. a mother holding up her child over a grate to have one (usually a girl on the 'holding'; boys only need to stand and aim through the grid..:D) .. used to an acceptable and regular sight years ago.

Apparently people poo in bus shelters where I live (Ossy). :D

By the way meant indigenous not that word I made up on the other post.. not that Cashy would have noticed ... Brain starting to switch off for the night.

Course there is still that piece of metal in the corner of the Fort's Arms Beechy .. fits into the corner coming outwards and rounded at the bottom .. was to stop the drinkers relieving themselves in there after they had come out of the pub. It would just dribble onto their shoes ... :D:D Suppose they just went up the back street anyway.

Think they were quite common but this is the only one left now in Hyndburn.
