Calamity

Calamity is when the washing machine breaks down.....complete with a full load of washing inside.....and it's Sunday too.
So no chance to book a repairman.

Yes, it was a blowy day on Sunday...a bit overcast and the forecast said there could be showers, but hey....you have to seize the day.

So I decided to bung my throws into the washer.
They could have a freshen up and be on the line in little over an hour.....back on the sofa and chair int two hours.
What could be simpler?
Well, there is a saying about best laid plans....and it is true...so true.

So there I was getting on with my usual Sunday chores....moving the furniture to vacuum underneath....picking up the rugs to sweep underneath....the usual stuff....bit of beeswax spray on my noodle slippers to polish the boards(and I enjoy the sliding over the shiny wood before I put the rugs back down).

I went upstairs, made the bed and came down to hear the washer making a strange crunching sound.
I could not understand why this should be.....there was nothing in the wash that would make that sort of noise.

I went to investigate and noted that the washer was neither spinning or emptying the water.

Damn, blast and other mild expletives(well, it WAS Sunday).

I turned the machine off and tried it on spin and rinse.....it did neither.
Oh bu88er.....it was on the fritz.

I mentioned this to himself and he had the audacity to tell me that I had 'broken it'.

I beg your pudden.....I have been doing washloads for more years than I care to say....I know how to do this stuff....how very dare he?

Needless to say he did not stir his stumps to come and see if he could do anything practical to help.

I could not even open the door to get the sodden throws out.

I stood there for a moment, gathering my thoughts.
Then I rooted in the drawer that holds all the manuals for household machinery.

Everything there but the manual for the washer.

I just wanted to cast my eyes over the troubleshooting bit.
Himself asked if the machine was still under warranty....alas no. The warranty ran out in April.

He said that these expensive machines should not breakdown when they were a little over a year old.

Not finding the manual was no big deal....I could pull up the online version.

But while I was looking for the manual I decided to take a short cut and see if there was anything online about my machine not emptying.

There it was.
A YouTube video that was very helpful.
It showed how to drain the water from the machine(no flooded kitchen) and how to open up a little 'trap'.....to check for foreign objects....socks, buttons, etc.

It took me a few minutes to empty the machine of water.....after which the safety mechanism released the door and I could take out the sopping wet throws.

Then I put two thick towels down before I opened the 'trap'......I am glad I did this because there was still quite a bit of water in there.
I fiddled about in the hole and removed a sort of fan thing.....a heard something metallic tinkle.....it was a penny(it did not come from my pockets....I do not putnloose change in my pockets).
It looked like this had been the problem, but I would not be sure until I ran the washer....so I,put it on a short wash.....hallelujah, it was fixed.

Did himself give me a pat on the back for sorting it.?
Did he congratulate me on my initiative.....?
Did he thank me for saving him money?
Did he apologise for leaving the penny in his pocket?

HE DID NOT!

I took the two wet throws over to Daughters to be spun while I was effecting investigations....and repairs....Thank You Nicola!
So they did get dried ....and put back on the sofa later that day.

I did not make a drama out of a crisis.......and I am glad that the blooming washer is fixed.

Angelas son sometimes leaves stuff in his pockets which end up in the washer, cos mostly he does his own, at least thats summat imho.

Yes, there are times when I feel distinctly undervalued, but I have a cure for this.
I just buy myself something that I know I will enjoy and tell myself that is the bill for my services paid in full.
For this event I got two sets of liquid water colours, a set of Chinese brushes(they are what the Chinese do their traditional writing with...).and two pen sets.....both with different nibs.....so it feels like a good deal to me.
Himself will not know until the postman comes with my parcels of goodies

many the time ive opened the washer and/or the dryer and found bits of paper in them … ive left a piece of paper in my jeans pockets and that's it ..

Oh Jen, that is HIS trick......and the washer chews up the paper tissues and distributes over the dark washing...it is always a dark wash.....Grrrrr!
