want to move some desktop icons into a folder, is this possible? if so how do i do it?would be grateful for any info in numpty language.

Just drag and drop them into the folder(left mouse button click and hold)
or cut and paste them (right mouse button, press over the icon, select cut, open folder you are putting them in, right click on an empty space and select paste)

If you don't need the desktop icons, do you really need to put them into a folder, or could you bin them instead?

If they are shortcuts, you can normally safely bin them. A shortcut is denoted by a small curly arrow in the bottom left of the icon.

If you access a program regularly, it will show up when you click Start in Windows XP.
