Just read margaret p's blog about not liking easter .. and it brought back memories of what it was like when i was a kid.
Good Friday was always the church trip ... either the lake district or derbyshire. When we got there they'd kick all the kids off the coach with the adults who were still mobile. Then there'd be a 10 mile hike to meet up with the coach. The adults who werent mobile enough to make the hike stayed on the coach and went on a country run type of thing. Then we'd all meet up again and then we'd all have a drink and butties and biscuits and cakes and then we'd all set off back home again.
When they stopped doing the coach trips dad took over. Him and mum would take me off to scotland for easter. It was interesting ... my dad was never one for maps, mum couldnt read one to save her life .. and i dont know how many times we've ended up in farm yards, fields, dead ends all because dad wanted to see what was down that road. We went all over scotland .. but always ended up in fort william on the monday .. bypassing loch ness on the way.
When he couldnt drive because he was ill he still took over the cooking on good friday .. Mum always told us that we werent allowed to eat meat on good friday .. and dad cooked fish better than my mum. I dont like fish ...well i'll eat salmon, prawns and mussels but dont like haddock, cod, tuna etc. But dad used to coat it in flour and whatever else and then fry it ...it was good ..especially the coating and i'd eat that .. and we'd have dads fish with new potatoes and veg, then for tea it would be salad with john wests red salmon. After dad died when i was 18 mum tried to make the fish like dad did ....and we all said that it wasnt as good as dad's .. so mum never made it again ..
Easter sunday was either roast chicken or roast beef ... with roast spuds, mashed spuds and all the veg, with strawberries and cream for afters. Always liked easter .. we got strawberries .. that is after all the chocolate we eat.
So thats my memories of easter ...
