Fleetwood Game

Whilst the manner of their winner was less than palatable, over the 90+ minutes, I think they were the better team sadly.

Their passing was slicker and more meaningful, we just seemed dis-jointed and all at sea????

Not sure what has happened in the short time since the Crewe game

Val,
I said after the Crewe game, our team had the best balance I'd seen all season. On that day Woods, Walton and O'Brien started in place of Madden, Coyle and Mathews. Walton and Woods stretch us further up the pitch when they play together meaning we have an outlet up front ALL the time. Madden doesn't do that and neither does Whalley. They both play a bit deeper and are easier to marshall by opposition centre backs. Also, Conner gets forward whereas Mathews doesn't, he stays back doubling up with Rawson so we tend to sit back and play deeper...........we're more effective and cause a greater threat when we stretch the play, but we haven't had some players available this season due to injury. One last thing. I'd never start with Coyle.......Butterworth would have been my choice...but I don't pick the team. Only my opinion.

Fully agree with the observations expressed by Val, Exile and CG above. Fleetwood were full of zip in the first half and Stanley played like strangers. However, the referee missed a number of late contacts and a lot of pushing. Donald Love got clipped late and the ref did award a yellow card to that offender but after that he let similar incidents go unpunished. Stanley did much better in the second half and it was pleasing to see Josh Woods flick in his header from well outside the near post and at a very fine angle. The refereeing got even worse in the second half including the assistant referees who should have flagged to help a very poor referee who also failed to see a blatant throwing of the ball away by a Fleetwood player late on. I thought that Stanley deserved a draw having been a bit lucky to hold the deficit at half time to only one goal. We could see the obvious handball in the build up to the decisive goal from 80+ yards away in the Clayton End. Why did the assistant referee not flag for it because he was the person closest to it in the whole ground! Absolutely shocking from all three officials in my honest opinion. Never seen John Doolan so angry down the touch line and in his post match interview!

Any trainee refs out there?
In the second half Rawson had to have the trainer on as he lay on the ground in Stanley?s penalty area. He then had to off the pitch for the requisite time.

Later, two Fleetwood players went down in their penalty area (conveniently as Stanley were pressing, but then we all saw their idea of fair play) and both had to be attended by physios. But neither were required to leave the pitch!
Why not?

choirboy and I discussed that at the time Exile.... we did not know if it was the 'head injury' protocol.....

Somebody will let us know I am sure ;)

:)

Exceptions to this ruling are made only for:

. Injury to a goalkeeper.

.When a goalkeeper and an outfield player have
collided and both need immediate attention.

.When players from the same team have
collided and need immediate attention.

.When a severe injury has occurred, e.g.
swallowed tongue, concussion, broken leg, etc.

Simple reason is that both players we're from the same team !! If it had been one from each team then both would have gone off if that makes senses ..

Crown Grounder,
Agree with your observations re team selection.
I would never have backed us to win had I known we would start with Coyle and Seamus in midfield. Doolan insists on doing that when he feels pressured, but I don’t think we have ever won with them both.

Plus Dan Martin played too, nothing against any of those players, but there is not much creativity there.

Suspension and injury dictated the team sadly, we are safe and live to fight another season, less than 2000 on the gate, never going to have world beaters at Stanley.
