For The uninitiated.....

For those Luddites out there who have never heard of a Fire stick......these are a small device that permits your TV to connect to the internet and get programs from the internet....this is called ‘streaming’....and it a facility that is built in to Smart TV’s.....but you do have to have an internet connection.
Without it the device is just an ornament.
One of my neighbours (an older lady) was going to buy one so that she could watch some older comedy shows.
It was just a good job she talked to her daughter before she bought this.....because she has no internet connection.

Anyway, now you know what one of these things are.....I will continue.
This little gadget arrived the day after I ordered it...now that is good service.
I put it on the table in the front room, telling myself I was not going to start setting it up until himself was out.
But....my fingers itched to get it set up.
So I told himself that I was going into the front room to do my Yoga practice.....and not to disturb me.
It took me no time to connect the little thing, but what did take time was the downloading of the updated software and the setting up of accounts for a variety of programs.
So I was gone for....well a couple of hours.
When I came back into the living room himself commented that I had been a long time.

I told him that the relaxation section of the yoga program had sent me to sleep.

A little later I asked him to come into the front room as I needed him to reach up and move the aerial as I was going to retune the TV to see if I could get a better reception.

I turned on the TV and he was about to leave(after doing as I had asked)....but I told him to sit down and watch what I had done.
I activated the Fire stick and he was amazed at what was available.
(It was then that he told me he knew I was ‘up to something’.....and had not fallen asleep during the relaxation bit of my yoga practice.
I asked him how he knew. He said ther was no carpet pattern on my face......so I was sprung)
OK some of it is subscription, but there is a lot that isn’t.
I introduced him to YouTube and showed him some of the live concerts that he would be able to watch.
He looked a bit befuddled by the remote control......so I pressed the microphone button and told him to speak out loud the name of a film or program he would like to watch.
He asked for ‘The Lady Vanishes’.....and there it was on the screen......so, yes...I think he will be able to find what he wants.

If I hear him say, during this coming winter, that there is nothing on TV to watch.....
Well, I swear that I will be up in front of a judge trying to tell him how my other half came to be impaled on a knitting needle.

Oh yes, he was so impressed that he asked me to order another of these gadgets for the living room TV......so maybe it is a winner.

Not a bad bit of kit, had one for a couple of years now & it does for my limited viewing. The Amazon Music "channel" is definitely the most used, my own bought kit is on there, plus there is all the "Recommended by your viewing" options. :)

We have only had these gadgets for a couple of days so I am still finding things....but being a Scottish Jew with Yorkshire connections they have to be FREE.
I await the winter months when himself is closeted at home.
Just let him tell me there is nothing to watch...or find him watching Judge Judy.....and he’s for it!!!

I can relate to that, there's enough free content to keep you occupied & eventually the prime/pay content will filter down to the free section.

Cashy mate, you plug it into your tellys USB port & it then works over your WLAN/WiFi internet access allowing you to stream various things from T'tinterweb, that being the idea of the thing.

I use Amazon Prime & pay a yearly subscription, this then allows me to use my firestick to view exclusive Amazon content & other stuff they've managed to get access to for subscribers. Well that's how it works over here in Germany mind, I'd assume the same principle applies in UK. I think there was a discussion about the merits of Netflix vs Amazon on the forum a while back.

Yes....You plug it into the TV set and put your wifi password in.
Then this little stick downloads the software it needs and then you can watch things like Pluto TV...free...you can watch YouTube stuff...concerts, comedy series from years ago, educational stuff...all of the catch up stuff is on there too though you have to register for the ITV hub and also for iPlayer.....there is every type of music you can ask for and there is sport of all descriptions too...but some of these channels are subscription.
Himself has been truly amazed at what is on there.....but I have to access it on the TV before he can ask the TV to play what he wants to watch...but maybe with practice he will get that bit too(though I am not hopeful)
